The Tyranny of the To-Do List

I used to keep a running to-do list. My lists always ended up getting out of control though, and growing to the length of a novel. So that in the end they didn't help me keep organized and only increased my stress level. My brother is a to-do list fanatic. He has a 6 ft to-do list hanging from his bedroom wall! No wonder he's stressed out all the time. And he has become almost like the white rabbit- always late for a very important date... the next thing he has to get crossed off his list. I stopped using them. If something doesn't get done then tough. There's always tomorrow.

Hello dear zigzag buddha. I hope that you would not get so stressed from keeping a running-to-do list as it would indeed bring you some stress if you could not finish the mission that you have kept. It is better to live in a relaxing mood every day. Thanks for your discussion, dear friend.

Hello my friend! I noticed someone calling you Sir William... I want to call you that too! May I? Yeah, my last to-do list was about 20 pages long and everytime I looked at it my stomach would start churning, so I started hiding it from myself... I finally realized how pointless it was to have it!

Hello my dear zigzag buddha friend. Yes, you can call me that way and I am happy for that just like the way I love to separate zigzagbuddha in the hope that you don't mind. hehe. Have a good day, dear friend.

Yay! OK then Sir William! And yes you can call me whatever you want, even 'bad names'! (Of course you're too much the gentleman to do that!), but I'll answer to anything. I have one item on my mental to-do list and that is to stop hanging out on MyLot all night long and then sleeping half the day away. It is very addicting!!!

Dieties that remind me to live from Source-centere - Within my spiritual path I have discovered that my connection to Source is larger than any dogma...and I surround myself with things that augment my path of peace, love, light and hope. These deities remind me of peace and serenity when I look at them.
Oh boy...can I relate to this topic. I used to be ruled by the same tyrannical to do lists and it made both my life...and David's an endless series of projects. Things began to change for me when David looked me straight in the eye and asked..."When will enough ever be enough for you?" BOING....one of those life-altering light-bulb moments occurred and I created the kind of illumination I was in sore need of. When David and I talked about the lists and what they represented and I meditated on what the truth of them were for me I realized I was striving for control..but that need had developed to a level where I was no longer living in the now. That awareness and my studies in Buddhism allowed me to accept that it was more important to be present and aware within my experience than distracting myself with endless to-do lists and 'should-ing' myself all the time. Thankfully that was years ago and I am happy and content doing what I choose to within my moment-by-moment experiences and living within the NOW-NESS of life. Great topic...good to be back in touch. Nice photo! I don't practice Buddhism though. I disagree with their views on desire, the way I understand it anyway. As far as I can tell, the Buddhists talk about desiring things being the cause of suffering. I believe that it is desiring things and not knowing how to align yourself with the things you want, therefore either not getting them, or getting the opposite instead... that's where the pain is! Desire is what puts the eternity in eternity. You never get it done, because as soon as you accomplish this then there is another that, then another and another and another... hehehe, so the trick is to just enjoy the moment... perfect as it is and pregnant with possibilities. I like to start my day with a cup of coffee and compose a brief list of the things I need, and expect, to get done that particular day. Like tonight I already know that tomorrow I want to go up and feed the mountain kitties and see if I can get a shot of my new Patches, so I can compare with this one of her in the boot, not much to go on but still. Plus, while I'm there I want to get a bag of straw from one of the sheds around there. I need it in my garden. Plus, since it has rained I need to do all of the digging that I can possibly do while the ground can still be easily worked. By the way, in reference to a comment you made about your clay soil in another post somewhere, every thing that I read said NOT to mix sand in clay soil! The additive of choice was compost, and I have grass clippings galore, as well as bags full of leaves that I bring out of the mountain. I throw in kitchen scraps (and I do a lot of juicing and prepping of fresh veggies), plus I throw in a shovel or two full of soil. Then I water them and turn them religiously. Good thing I don't have a friggin' job because as soon as I finish mowing these 2 yards, toting leaves out of the mountain, and turning over my compost piles, I don't have time for too much else! Hehehe... I did hang my favorite hammock though today. I even spent a goodly amount of time swinging in it with my bobcat kitty acting like it was catnip. She swung in the hammock with me, rubbing luxuriously up against it this way then that, sprawled to the limit, then she rode around in the wheel barrow for awhile... she had a great day in the garden! I'm also mulching the fruit trees, which actually wasn't on my to-do list for today... digging was all I was going to do today. Although I did want to hang my hammock. But I got too tired digging... I was so exhausted I was shaking! But I got it to a nice flat point, and I can finish that section off tomorrow I think, so I went over and finished mulching the peach tree. Gawd, am I a one-track minded gardener or what? Jeez!

To do lists are great. If they are properly prioritized. I write one about once a week. Usually lost it monday and find it six thursdays from yesterday. That sentence belongs in panda spanking... But I really do love them check lists for camping, shopping lists, a to do list for chores and a to do list for home improvement, I have a to do list at work. If I don't finish though I just tell someone else to do it. Cheers.

I'm not saying lists are not handy tools. Yeah, delegating is a very good solution to an overflowing to do list!
