If you really want to do something extra, give them some classroom supplies. Most teachers I know spend a lot of their own money getting some things to make class time nicer. How about some stickers, or gold stars, (that they can put on papers) or some colored chalk, or something like that. (Most of them get far too many knick-knacks and mugs.)Or, if you just want to do something a little extra special that costs nothing, how about a care package:
Put all the items in a bag or baggie with a slip of paper with the following written on it:
A care package to help you do 'whatever it takes'
STICK OF GUM- to remind you that you always stick with it
CANDLE to give you light when you feel burnt out
CHOCOLATE KISS to remind you that somebody cares
SMARTIES to help you on days when you're tired and don't feel too smart
LIFESAVER to remind you that everybody needs help once in a while
SNICKER BAR to remind you to always see the funny side
ROSE to remind you to take time to smell the flowers
CONFETTI to help you celebrate the good times
A PENNY payment for sharing your wisdom and thoughts
A BAG to help you keep it all together
(use a little birthday candle, a craft rose, etc)

I think the class gift is sufficient. The whole point of something like that is so that the parents don't have to scramble around looking for an inexpensive teacher gift to buy. This way, you spend a little money, save time and the teacher gets a gift from the whole class. If one parent decided that they needed ot send an additional gift, then other parents would decide the same thing and there would be no point to them doing the class gift.

I think a class gift is sufficient. Teachers often end up with a lot of stuff they can't use when each child decides to bring a gift. Pooling the money gives the teacher something more expensive and hopefully something useful.
Besides, if your son brought an additional gift, it might make some of the other kids feel bad that they hadn't.

I believe that i little gift for teachers or your chief at work would be a little appreciation after the years you´ve spent working. I think a hole class should go together and by the gift, as we do at my work, all of us college put in a little amount for a gift to our chief.

If I were you I'd give the teacher a gift subtly IF YOU KNOW THEM WELL but if your kid's friends find out- they may laugh or tease him for sucking up to the teachers and your child will be left feeling like the odd one out.
