Christmas Stocking... the story behind it  |

|  The most popular legend of the Christmas stockings says that there was once a father who had three beautiful daughters. These three girls were destined to live a life without husbands because their father could not raise enough money for their dowries.
Their plight was overheard by Saint Nicholas of Myra one day. That night, Saint Nicholas dropped three bags of gold down the chimney of the house that they lived in.
It so happens that the girls had washed their stockings and hung it above the fireplace to dry. The bags of gold dropped into the stockings.
When others heard of this occurrence, they began to hand their stockings at the fireplace as well, in the hope that Saint Nicholas will also remember them and drop them bags of gold.
Heh heh... interesting beginning to an age old tradition, isn't it?

| |  I enjoy hearing legends like this. I find them very interesting! Thanks for sharing. I wonder if that's how the whole idea of him coming down the chimney got started also. I mean if you think about it, it is an odd thing to come up with unless there's a story like that to explain it.

Cos there is no way to explain how the gold got put into the stockings.
Being the logical creatures we are, we have to have a story that is logical, so comes the story of some one going down the chimney to put it into the stockings.
What I would like to find out though is the story behind the reindeers and the sleigh.
Heh heh... that would be nice to know how it came about.

| | I remember hearing that the red suit actually came about fairly recently (early 1900's) when the Coca-Cola company used Santa in an advertisement. Their signature color is red so the put him in a red suit purely for appearance sake...but that could just be one of those myths that circulates as truth, I'm really not 100% sure. | | | |
