That TV program was very misleading then. Actors don't have a set wage. It's not like one earns 2 million a year and another earns 3 million a year. It depends on what movie they're doing. Even famous actors do independent movies like Little Miss Sunshine that may not pay millions of dollars. Then at other times they do some ridiculous multi-million dollar flick that pays their expenses for the next decade.
The highest paid actor or actress is just the last one to sign a big deal. At the moment I think Reese Witherspoon is the highest paid, but it could easily be someone like Jim Carey if he comes out with a new movie.

I believe it is based on popularity in that field. Why do you think men should get more money? Shouldn't one be paid according to their skills or what they are worth, (whichever, or both depending on the field and what applies), and not what gender they are?

Actors and actresses are paid based on how big an audience the movie/show producers think that person will pull into watch the movie. People are more likely to see a movie starring someone they know rather than someone they have never heard ofSo, producers are willing to pay popular stars more to be in thier productions, hoping they will make more money in the end. It doesn't really matter the actor's gender, just who is "hot" at the time. Sometimes the men make more than the women, and vice versa.

Actually, whether an actor or actress is good in their acting skills or not is subjective. I may think this actor is good but my friend may think otherwise. I guess popularity can be the only gauge. Only when the actor/actress is popular, then will people be attracted to watch the movie. This is the reason why many movie producers are willing to pay big bucks to get the most popular/famous actors or actresses to act in their movies.
At different periods of time, different actors/actresses are more popular. I guess currently, female actresses are popular and which is why they are paid more. I am sure there are times when male actors are paid more.

Actors and Actresses are paid for a film based on their potential box office draw. They also get paid for some appearances, royalties from prior work (dvd sales, sometimes when a movie airs on cable, and sometimes merchandising). Sometimes also having a hand in the production of the film makes a difference too. ALso, take into account some actors/actresses have a busy year and do a lot of films one year (even if they are released in a lengthier span) while some work on just one project or take time off so that has something to do with it too.

i see no problem in having women/actresses receive higher earnings than men/actors. as men, if we give much attention and fuss on it, it will only show that we are insecure of our status. let the women get what is due them, and let the men work for their living and status. it is good for men to have a competition with women.
