Teaching your kids to cook.

There are many cookbooks out there for children. I have a young daughter of four years old. She likes to help in the kitchen and I like to encourage her to participate. Do you have any suggestions for easy children's recipes, cookbooks, or even just a funny teaching-children-to-cook anecdote? When I was a child, I came home from school and was hungry -- but not for anything in the fridge. I decided to cook something. We had leftover pie crust dough, so I rolled out a pie crust and went looking for things to put in it. Raisins, cinnamon sugar, pineapple, these sounded like sweet pie filling stuff to me. The pie was horribly sweet. I ate a small piece and left the rest on the table. Later, I came back to discover that my brother had eaten the rest of the pie. Do you have any idea how much fiber can be found in an entire pound of raisins? I assume that he suffered for his gluttony in silence somewhere.

I went to a Discovery Toys party once. Was thrown by a mother of one of my daughter's school classmates. Shame they didn't have a cookbook at the party because it would have been a simple choice of a gift to buy for my daughter. I wound up buying something called "Zingo," which is a sort of bingo-like game where two tiles are displayed at a time. Anyway, she seems to like that game, but I wish I'd seen the cookbook, too.

OH the kids and I love Zingo! I used to be a DT rep so I have a lot of their products. You should maybe go to the site and search for a rep in your area and ask to see a catalogue. I know the cookbook I have is no longer part of their regular stock however I've seen it available during the winter and summer sales! They should be right in the middle of their winter sale now!

My son is a hyper little ball of energy and usualy we are spending a lot of time trying to get him to focus. When he was four I decided to have him help me in the kitchen and found out he had a true love for cooking and a great deal of natural tallent. Now he helps me cook all the time and my daughter is learning as well. We bought the kids a few cook books made just for kids and they love them. It is great when we can combine something we need to do with good quality time.

This morning, my daughter helped make drop biscuits. I think the cooking helps her learn more about following instructions and patience, which seems to be similar to your experience with your son. I'm glad to hear he has a natural talent for cooking, especially if he can be taught to cook healthy food. It is surprising what kids eat in college. :)

LOL Your poor brother. I just recently got a cookbook by Betty Crocker that is just for kids and it is great. I also let my Nephew help me cook whenever he comes over. He likes it and I think it's important for kids to learn. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~
