Marion Jones Sentenced to 6 Months in Prison |
|
Marion Jones has been sentenced to six months in prison for her steroid use and lying about it. I'm not starting this to debate how wrong she was to lie and cheat; I couldn't agree more about that. What I would like to discuss is if putting her in prison is really necessary or appropriate. She's been stripped of her medals, she's been publicly humiliated, she's lost everything she worked for. I'm not saying she shouldn't have, but what will be accomplished by putting her in prison? Shouldn't we be saving the room in our over-crowded prisons for violent criminals instead of filling them with those guilty of "victimless crimes"? Annie

2. Thoroughrob (7993) | 2 years ago | I think they have more important things to be concerned with and that was a little steep. Our prisons are already overcrowded and there are worse criminals that need to be there. Boy, what would our prisons would be like if they started doing that to politicians. They are always doing that, she has been punished enough in my opinion.

anniepa (9303) | 2 years ago | You made a good point here, Rosie. Those in the Bush Administration are exempt from any of the laws the rest of us are expected to follow. You're also probably right about Ms. Jones; perhaps she can clean up her name and get a fresh start. Annie

I agree the space should be for hardened criminals... but I guess the law is the law and they do how they like... unless you are a popular celebrity that gets of in a few hours. It depends on how much they like you I guess.

5. SuzyPuppyChese (567) | 2 years ago | I always have funny feelings about the steroid scandals. I'm sure the use of them has been widespread. I just wish that the various sports, their managers, coaches and unions, would quit encouraging them -- warning when a "surprise" test is coming up,glorifying the winners for winning when they don't get caught, and then vilifying them when they do. It's a sickening system.
I don't think Marion Jones needs to be further punished, or to take up prison space. But she got caught for perjury, and now she is an example. The court can't put her above the law.

anniepa (9303) | 2 years ago | That's the point I was trying to make too. Community service would be so much more affective. She could go around and speak to young people, especially young athletes, and make them realize how all their hard work could go for absolutely nothing if they don't follow the rules, not to mention the harm they are risking to their own bodies by using these performance enhancing drugs. 7. oneandonemakesix (24038) | 2 years ago | the judge wanted to use her as an example, because like some other stars it wasn't about using the drugs as much as it was lying ot a federal grand jury.
The judge wanted to make an example out of her, and while I know that it was painful for her and her husband to have to go through this, I have to say right now that I'm betting she'll be out in 3 months or less with good behavior....
She has an opportunity when she gets out to start letting kids know the dangers but the consequences of using these type of products.

8. ElusiveButterfly (9493) | 2 years ago | I didn't realize that she was sent to jail for this. There are celebrities who drive drunk and served a day in jail for their crime. What justice is that?

9. skinnychick (3317) | 2 years ago | In this case, she really has been punished enough. People make mistakes and do stupid things- she didn't hurt anyone else other than herself and has lost everything she has worked for. I agree that she should be done with her punishment and let the bad guys and gals rot away in prison. They are probably just trying to make an example out of her but maybe they should sentence her to house arrest, community service and some public service announcements- get the word out about what trouble drugs cause instead of just sitting somewhere with her whole story forgotten in about 3 weeks.

10. enbrown (218) | 2 years ago | She didn't really hurt anyone, but it is a bad example for kids everywhere. Make her pay a fine. They need to spend more time teaching criminals how to get ahead without following old destructive patterns.
