India is still a agricultural country. Above 75% of its people depend on farming. Incase if agriculture becomes success in this season no word to describe because the farmers will be very busy to celebrate the pongal festival.Offcourse they are entitled to celebrate this festival on a grand scale. I must say what this festival mean is: After successful harvest the farmers keep aside some rice to prepare the pongal. It is wonderful to see if we go a village to see how this pongal is celebrated. First day of the month in Tamil (Thai) i.e..15th January all villagers assemble in a common place early morning before sunrise start the preparation of pongal. The mud pot is decorated with colours, saffron bushes is tied around the pot and the villagers keep the prepared pot simultaneously in the prepared place and set fire.Pongal consist of rice, jaggery, cahewnuts, milk and ghee.
Once the pongal is ready they worship the sun god keeping this feast pongal.Offcourse sugarcanes take a very important part in this pongal season. They put on new dresses on this day and enjoy the whole day very happily. This way the pongal festival is celebrated all over Tamil nadu in India.
In our house we are ready to celebrate this festival with joy and fun and eagerly awaiting for this day.

I'm so glad that you explained about the festival.
Though I know about Pongal, I'm sure most of our North Indian friends and people living in other countries have no clue what it is.
Happy Pongal in advance.
My son's school has given him 2 days off....for Pongal AND Sankranthi..so it's a double bonus for us.
