Okay it's getting mighty cold and windy with windchills nearing 50 below zero tongith here in Minnesota. Once this type of weather sets in us Minnesotans tend to board ourselves indoors not wanting to step out in this cold air. We get whats known as "Cabin Fever" from this. Meaning we get down in the dumps due to being locked inside and not going anywhere for an extended period of time. I myself and ,my family is not this type. I will be out in this tonight as well as tomorrow and Sunday. Not playing in it but getting my wife from work, shopping, and of course going to the casino. So do you or do you know about cabin fever? Are you the type that would hole up in your house when it gets this frigid and nasty outdoors? Do you stockpile food and water etc for weather stretches this bad for a long time? I do not as I don't really mind being out in it. I won't go out just to be out but I won't stop my daily routines due to an artic front this bad.

I am very familure with the saying, 'cabin fever' and have at times suffered from it but don't anymore. I do however stay inside as much as possible when it gets like this - the difference is I take advantage of the situation and actually look forward to the excuse to not go out - I am a home body and find tons of things to keep me occupied while stuck inside.

LOL so much for my cabin fever - son, 16, got bored so took the Gator out for a drive. Naturally he couldn't just 'ride' he went back in the woods and found a small mud hole that was frozen over. Said he walked on it to see if the ice would hold but over an hour later he came in my room needing Mom's help. The ice held him but not the Gator and he spent that time trying to get it out of the foot of water and another foot of mud under that. Problem was he was stuck on ice and couldn't move. I bundled up and we took a walk in the woods. I drove while he wadded in the mud and water and lifted the front up. We got it out but be-lined it home so he could get soaking wet frozen cloths off.
I started a small fire in the fireplace and he sat in the living room with me for a bit. Naturally he's off and running again but I'm happy setting here nice and warm watching it snow outside and playing catch-up on myLot.

I have to agree with you that I could find all kinds of things to do inside without getting bored. But with the way I work, I have to venture out daily. I look forward to the day that I can put my home body to use at home!

Now that is cold, the people I work with are such whiners. The complain about the cold when it is 40 out. They start their cars 15 or 20 minutes to get them warm. A wind chill of 50 below, yes, that justifies starting the cold early. That is cold, how long are you expecting this to last?
As for cabin fever -- only if the there is a state of emergency and I can't drive. I normally don't stay home. One year the actual temp went down to like 25 below. The next day

I let my car run a few minutes as well. Otherwise the warmth of my breath freezes the windshield actually. HAHAHAHA!! They say a 10 day stretch of where we will be in single digits for high temps and maybe 5 days with below zero temps at tnight. We still have a windchill advisory out here till 6 tonight. Its 7 below with 25 below windchills right now. Just ran all my weekend errands recently so now I am staying indoors till we leave for the casino Sunday afternoon/morning. HAHAHA!!HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Wow, you do have it cold, it is a rather balmy 32 here and it is 11:15 PM. Tomorrow night we are hitting single digits. But then we are going back up to the teens.
I guess if you have plans to go to the casino and you have heat in your car, you might as well go.
Enjoy...win something for me.

We dont get as cold as weather as you do. But we do get some occasional snow which has been pretty deep. When we are expecting a bad snow storm I always make sure we have milk bread and CHOCOLATE!heheheheh We are expecting very cold weather coming in tonight. We really havent had a bad winter this year. So I think I will enjoy it. Just as long as it doesnt hang around here to long!LOL

I never worry about those type of staples as there is a grocery store about a mile away from us. And most Minnesotans don't worry about a mere frigid streak like we are having right now. Nor do we worry a lot about a major snow storm. HAHAHA! It's all part of being a true blue Minnesotan I reckon.

I am lucky i live in the UK and we don't get really cold weather but we do get a lot of rain and wind these days.
It's quite depressing to look out at gloomy clouds. Is it sunny when it's cold where you are? i always think if it's cold but sunny it's quite cheerful.
Don't get too cold Bob.

It is real sunny today. But the sun is at it's furthest from us so it doesn't really warm the air much. I had to wear sunglasses today.

Hi Bob
I think it's nice when the sun shines it cheers you up even if it is still cold.
Just hope you have some nice thick woolies to where when you go out.
I can't imagine what it's like to be that cold. The coldest i've seen here in the UK is -14 and most of that was the wind that made it that cold. But that really was a shock to the system. We don't expect it too be that cold here.
Our Country is getting ready in case there is more flooding. It's quite bad in similar areas to last year. I really do feel for those people as they were just about to go back and live in there houses after months of being in a caravan.
Have a good day speak to you soon.

50 below zero. It sounds like the weather in the northeast part of China. I am glad that I am not living in such a cold place, but in the east of China, where the climate is ok for us southerners. Stay warm as always, dear friend.

I can barely imagine living in conditions like that. the windchill might get down close to zero here but its very rare, I can imagine if it got down that far below zero. But I would have to say that I would be one that just stayed in unless I absolutely needed to go out. I'm not a big fan of cold ha ha.

I do not have much choice, there are people who need me at both of my jobs, so if they are there, I am there. I do not like the one that has me driving a half hour in the cold in the dark, but the other one is not too bad. My adult clients though often get their programs canceled, because their health is fragile. It was 16 degrees when I came home tonight. I do not know what the windchill is, though. If given the choice, I would probably hole up during the day, and then when hubby got home, just cut loose. Go anywhere just to be with him.

16 is a heat wave for us Minnesotans right now. We will be lucky to be in the double digits above zero for the next 10 days or so. I think Thursday they're saying 12 for a hig temp. HAHAHAHA! Minnesobrrrr!

I have heard of the term Cabin Fever quite a lot. I dont think many, if any Australians would suffer from it the way some Americans do. Mostly our climate is comfortable to go outside. Even when the heat is extreme, we will at least go out for shopping & in the evening, Many people will just the day at the beach.
My goodness, minus 50 windchill is terrible.
It has been known that when the waether is very cold here, people are more likely to stay indoors, but I doubt whether anyone stockpiles food.

Yeah it was terrible outside last night. I washed the car windshield as I gassed up and in a minutes time my hands were sore from the cold air. Ugghh! I don't like sitting outside in the heat and humidty mainly because of my bronchial asthma.

Well thank God it NEVER gets that cold here..if it did I'd probably hole up and stay put for awhile myself..since I don't have a car to drive anywhere the idea of going in such a frigid element wouldn't be my cup of tea. I have to walk everywhere :(
As it is I'm getting a case of cabin fever with or without cold weather here...I only just went to the doctor today to see about getting rid of this bug in my system..I've been taking all kinds of herbal cures/remedies but while it's helped a tad I realized I needed those antibiotics. I've also been staying home more than usual though lately a lot due to that darn pain I've been having in my ankles and feet and it's driving me daft..I've been taking that Glucosamine stuff but it does take awhile to "kick" in. I just have to do a wait and see about tomorrow..DO want to go out but the weatherman is predicting "the storm of the century"--HA-HA You know how many times they say that and nothing happens?

We had a storm of the century back on Halloween day 1991. Over 4 feet of snow in a 24 hour period. Even the city of Minneapolis was shut down for a couple days. I loved it.

I'm sorry to say I do not get cabin fever. If I have to stay in for long periods of time there is always something for me to do. I knitt, I crochet and I get on the computer. I also cook and eat, boy do I eat.

Oh yes, Bob, I do have stockpile food. Some even tastes good.
In this weather you have two options.
a) Go through your stamp collection.
b) snuggle with the same old wife of many years.
Now, take your pick. The choice is yours.
Oh, I forgot: there is still the option of reading a good book....
Happy mylotting!

cabin fever, well I've not heard about that in a long time!
When it's raining torrentially, i will stay home, make myself my favourite hot chocolate and snuggle on my couch and play a good movie. of course, i can't do this everyday if I'm snowed in, for instance. I guess perhaps board games might go some way to staving off cabin fever.
good for you that you're going to brave the elements and continue with your daily life!

I can recall the blizzard of '78. We didn't go anywhere for several weeks except to feed the pigs and carry in fire wood. We were out of school for several weeks. So I can relate to cabin fever. Though now a days, I must work and since there isn't any snow preventing me from doing this, I continue out in the cold. Lately it has been warmer at my destinations than in my home, so I don't mind traveling about.
Stay warm!
