So this idea is only for the truly bold, the people unafraid to be - shudder - unconnected for a day. The idea is this, TURN IT OFF. What you ask? everything - every screen and mode of communication you have. Every computer, tv, dvd player and phone. Turn off your cell and even your land line - can you do it - just for one hour - for an entire day? Why would it be easy, or difficult - or a whatever thing for you? Tell me - and then come back and let me know if its what you imagined.

myLot reputation of 91/100. artemis432 (2142)   ranked 799 out of 23,344 in relationships  2 years ago

Why not the night time - is that when you use it more or less? I guess if its easy it wouldn't mean as much!

Actually last July 3 we lost our lights for several hours. I read all the magazines I had not gotten around to reading by candle light! I also do a few other things that didn't require electricity! Took a nap....went through a few drawers! It was peaceful and quiet!

myLot reputation of 91/100. artemis432 (2142)   ranked 799 out of 23,344 in relationships  2 years ago

sounds nice jillhill. I think we all need days like that. Times when the electiricity (hopefully not on a freezing day) and have to write a letter, read a magazine or book or take a walk.

I think i could handle that for an hour a day no problem. I do it for more then an hour a day usually, well i dont turn everything off, but i dont look at the tv or the pc, or answer the phone, When i put my daughter to bed, or naptime, she usually takes an hour to fall asleep and we cuddle and snuggle;)

myLot reputation of 91/100. artemis432 (2142)   ranked 799 out of 23,344 in relationships  2 years ago

That's sounds like a nice way to fall asleep. My baby is asleep on my lap right now! We still nurse, so he still co-sleeps - I can't wait till he's weaned!

So at times when you're busy with other things it doesn't matter. But what of timmes it might smart a little at first? Like turning your phone off for like 24 hours. Not watching tv for a few days or surfing the web - finding other things to do - writing handwritten letters to those you'd usually talk to on the phone?

myLot reputation of 96/100. Sissygrl (5760)   ranked 471 out of 23,344 in relationships  2 years ago

lol mine still co-sleeps too, she probably will untill she is trained to sleep in her own big girl bed, she wont sleep in her crib, but the new baby is SURE going in the crib and staying in the crib! i thought when i weaned my daughter i would get her to sleep in her crib at the asme time. LOL it so didn't work that way. How old is your baby? and is he (i think you said he sorry if its a girl!!) your first?

myLot reputation of 91/100. artemis432 (2142)   ranked 799 out of 23,344 in relationships  2 years ago

He's my first and he's almost 14 months. Still co-sleeping. We're going to skip the crib.

He used to have a papazon chair from fisher price - it would swing gently and had music and stars and moon would play out on the walls and he would go to sleep anytime in that - we got it at the tail end of colic - because the doc wanted him sleeping upright because of spitting up.

Then with the bassinett he would cry so much and that was just a pain getting up and down, so we got a little co-sleeper - too big for that now!

Now I've read once a baby can climb over the side of the crib its time for a big bed - well he's a great climber so we'll just transition to his bed too - one with side rails.

Wow yours will be so close together - how old is your baby again - 18 months! You need a kingsize bed. It be too hard to be aware of both of them I think - but many people do it! You'll totally have to keep me posted!

I wouldn't do it unless I had to hide from neo nazis like Anne Frank.I like watching movies on my VHS and DVD. I do watch some good shows, yes good shows on t.v. And I am on My Lot talking to you. If you think all this media is bad for you, then I am sorry but I like it and I am going to use it.

myLot reputation of 91/100. artemis432 (2142)   ranked 799 out of 23,344 in relationships  2 years ago

I had to laugh at the first sentence. We have our tv and computers on at all times here - many times we are doing both - or like the last week - after the baby goes to sleep I've been watching the lost series season one on the computer at abc.com - I did the same with Jericho.

No I wouldn't classify media as bad but just wondering if we'd be able to live without it. I think I would for a day or so - but take away my chapstick and watch out! I really need to do that one of these days, take away any lip aids I have - including olive oil - which I've used in emergency situations when I can't find anything else - much like a junkie drinking down mouth wash. Its a real addiction. I can't think clearly without it.

This is the first winter I haven't had chapped lips because I have been using a whole lot of chapstick.

Well some time back when my apt. building was going through electrical re-wiring I really didn't have a choice ..our electricity was off from 7 in the morning until 5 p.m. and this went on several times for about a full month...so EVERYTHING was off, and I have to admit it made me stir crazy...I would never have a problem of keeping off the TV,DVD, Radio as I don't even watch much TV to begin with..phone? Hardly ever talk on the phone either--the ONLY thing that would drive me completely daft to be without..yes the computer...but then I also do my work on it..so that is the only thing that would be a definite must for me to have

myLot reputation of 91/100. artemis432 (2142)   ranked 799 out of 23,344 in relationships  2 years ago

I can understand that - although it would be like a forced vacation from work! BTW your cafepress page is great - but not as amazing as your photography web pages - as their are only three items so far in your store.

With all due respect, bite your tongue. The only way for me to accomplish this is if my power goes out. I mean, I can read for an hour or two. But you say to turn off both phones and everything else for a whole day.
I do not watch television, so that would be no problem for me. It is hard for me to fall asleep without music and the only time I do not get on the internet is when I have first moved and it is not connected yet. But you are speaking of turning it all off for an entire day. Maybe I could work up to that point some day.

myLot reputation of 91/100. artemis432 (2142)   ranked 799 out of 23,344 in relationships  2 years ago

Your response totally made me smile. What would we do if all of sudden the electricit all over were cut off - I have to get off the grid fast so this will never happen. I think I'd like to be attached to the grid just in case but also have wind and solar power too - back ups! And generators!

We do have days where we don't use the computer at all - we don't have a TV at all! We often go camping and switch everything off and relax.

Hi artemis, turning off TV and cellphone, plus landline would be no problem for me. I rarely watch TV, use my cellphone only to sms my husband whether I will be at the station in time or later, as he is so nice of picking me up by car so I dont have to walk for 25 minutes. And I could well live with out that landline for a day, too.

But I wont turn off the computer simply as then next day I would drown in paid to read e mails and I dont want that as then I will not get any order into that again.
