Bats are stealing our mangos!  |

 At the house that my fiance and I rent, we are lucky enough to have a beautiful Bowen mango tree in the back yard. Every January it bears beautiful big juicy mangos but most of them are eaten by bats! What's worse is, most of the time they only take one bite, the mango drops to the ground then they go on to eat another one. It's quite disheartening to see dozens of rotting mangos on the ground. I've tried tying plastic bags to the tree but that doesn't seem to work. Do you have any sugestions as to how I can keep the bats off our mangos?

1.  suehan1 (1812) | 9 months ago |  i really do not know what to tell you besides talking to the locals in your area and asking their advice.you have tried to bag them,so i would seek help.my brother lived in cairns and he told me that there are so many mangos go to waste up there its not funny.he said you use to drive over them in your driveway as they would all fall off the trees.good luck.cheers sue

| 3. alamode (1838) | 9 months ago |  My Pop had to cover his corn with netting to keep the varmits away... I don't know how big your tree is, that may be impossible to do. You might have to look for something that emits a high-frequency sound to keep them away.

| coffeeshot (2053) | 9 months ago | What's a varmit?! Yeah I think netting would be the best way to keep them away. I read once that hanging a few large rubber snakes in the tree is good for keeping them away. I haven't yet tried that either/ | |

his case, it was squirrels. He also had a plastic owl
on a post that made a screeching noise when anything
came near it. It kept the rows away! | |

| alamode (1838) | 9 months ago | I'm sure their echolocation and their eyesight would keep them from getting tangled... or if one did, it would be warning for others to stay away. Pop never had anything get tangled, even though there were lots of birds around, etc. | |

| 4. abbey19 (1452) | 9 months ago |  I don't know the solution to your problem coffeeshot, but I do have a suggestion - why don't you go to your local nursery and ask them for some advice on how to keep the bats away from your mango tree? I'm sure they would be able to help you. It's such a shame to see all those delicious mangoes go to waste.

We have an apple and a pear tree and we had a lot of problems with birds soing this when they are bearing fruit. What worked for us was tying silver foil on some branches but I am not sure how effective this would or wouldn't be against bats - I really have no experience with them.
