Is The Iraq War a Determining Factor in the 2008 Presidential Elections? |
| |
| Most Americans will agree that they are tired of hearing about the war in Iraq, the death tolls, and sending more soldiers in to Iraq. How important is this issue to you in the upcoming presidential election? Would a candidate's stance on this issue be a deciding factor in gaining your vote? Why or why not? While I agree that the war is dragging on for far too long, I also have to admit that there is no easy answer to this one. I for one would be leary of voting for any candidate that wants to push an immediate withdrawl of our troops. I do not think that reducing the number of troops there would be a problem, but I believe that if we immediately took them all out, we would face serious consequences here at home. What are your thoughts on this issue? | | | | | |

| | I would love to never have to loose another friend or have to go over there. But in all honesty this is not going to end any time soon. The candidates so far haven't really touched on the subject but I feel they will say what wants to be heard.I personally do not like any of the candidates, so I will have to do some more researching on them. Once election is over all the promises they made go right out the window. | | | | | | |

| | I have to agree totally with you. We work with the military quite a bit, and I have to say that I greatly admire what our soldiers do for us. Just in case no one has said this to you...thank you! I am also having a hard time finding one candidate to stand behind. It is turning into the usuall mud slinging contests and just simply saying what is necessary to gain the vote. On a serious note, I have to agree that this is one war that will not end any time soon, no matter whom wishes other wise. Be safe. | | | |

| | You really can't...our best bet is to check out their voting record and see where they really stand on the issues. That is something that is fact and can be trusted....what they say will probably change once elected. It usually does. | | | |

| | Adoniah, very well said! Thank you so much for your insights. I also agree that there is no way out of Iraq for a very long time. I was unaware of the growing popularity of the Islomic beliefs though. That was a wake up call. I also agree that our soldiers should have been allowed to go in and finish what was started rather than turning this into the political war it is fast becoming. I wish more people thought like you do. | | | |

| | Thank~you for Best Response Mehale! I do feel this way. It is sad that we have seen so many die. I have lost several friends in this war and do not wish to lose any more, but I know that in reality there will be more. Shalom | | | |

| | Yes we have lost friends to the war as well. I am tired of seeing the death toll climb, but do not see a way to end the war any time soon. You are very welcome for the best response. | | | |

| | It may seem impossible, but a war that cannot be won is one that we need to get out of. The real war is not in Iraq, it is at home. We are facing an economic crisis caused by inflation of the money supply, record consumer & corporate debt, mortgage failures, and greed pure and simple. We face fierce competition from Asia, now economic, but militarily within a few years. We cannot win the war for the very survival of our country by defeating radical Islam, even if it were possible. Why isn't it possible to defeat radical Islam? When we defeated Japan, their soldiers wore uniforms, and their equipment carried the insignia of our enemy. Most of all, they were racially identifiable. While the same could not be said of the Germans, it was clear the nation of Germany was who they were fighting for. Since, WWII, we have not "won" a war against an identifiable enemy that was truly capable of conquering our nation. We fought to a draw w/ N. Korea, we gave up in Vietnam, we didn't remove Sadaam and his government in Gulf War I, and now that we have done so, we are still fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan and radical elements in Iraq. And what have these wars gained us except an astronomical national debt that we'll never repay. We have no territory to show for it. Vietnam is now a prosperous economy that we owe money to. The American love affair with war for its own sake has got to end. We need to confine ourselves to the protection of our borders against an armed menace. | | | | | | |

| | While I do agree with you that there is no way to win this war, I also do not see a way that we can just pull out without disastrous effects here at home. I truely think that as soon as the last troops leave, the terror attacks will begin again...probably even more severe than the last time, as they are now even madder at us. I just do not see a good solution for this issue. | | | |

| | The question we have to ask is to what extent is our occupation of Iraq a deterrent to further terrorist activity. Sure, the presence of American troops in Iraq has drawn radical elements from all over the world to fight in a Islamic holy struggle. But surely they must know the basic principle of warfare is to attack unexpectedly and at the point of your enemy's weakness. By continuing in a fruitless war (fruitless for us, though not for the Iraqi people), our country is weakened by the effort. Surely we see this economically, but also in our combat-trained and equipped reserves and National Guard being assigned to the Middle East. Those that are calling for an exit strategy are pro-defense of the nation. When is the Dept of Defense going to start living up to their name? In the long run, ending the debacle in Iraq will have the same result as pulling out of Vietnam - the communist armies did not mount an invasion of the US. The Vietcong just wanted us out - they did not want to continue the already protracted struggle. Nor does the majority of Islam intend on a violent takeover or even a disruption of our national government. They will do it peacefully, with numbers and with money, if they do it at all. We cannot fall for the latest version of wartime propaganda - that these human beings are really devils. If any body commits a terrorist act on United States interests, we should prosecute as we would any criminal. But, it is a police matter, not a military matter. The Iraq debacle is a classic case of swatting at a fly with a meat cleaver. | | | |

| | The Republican are the cause of all this problem, when they come there is war, I think any president coming in should not withdraw the troops from Irag because if they do it will be grevious not only there but here in America. So i think they should finish what they have a started and Fish out does behind it. I think It be a deciding factor for me. | | | | | | |

| | While I will agree that we do not need to pull out just yet, and I also think that yes we should finish what we started, I just don't see how we will be able to actually win this war. I also am not sure that a democratic government will survive in Iraq after our troops are gone. | | | |

| | As an outside observer of world events as well as the coming US Presidential elections, I would think that the Iraq War that the US and her UN allies championed in 2003 will have a bearing on the Republican's chances at the next election. President Bush had asserted that Iraq was in possession of weapons of mass destruction and that the war was necessary for the protection of the United States. Whether that was really Bush's agenda was questionable, and I personally feel that the whole issue was about the control of middle-east oil. No WMD were eventually found, but the war has dragged on longer than anticipated and casualties have been mounting. More and more US parents have lost their sons and daughters in a war where the parents probably feel their children have no real business to be involved in and give of their lives. The Iraq campaign is fraud with complications, and one wonders if US troops can really pull out sooner (rather than later) with Iraq's internal conflicts and the Middle-East situation so unstable. No doubt the failure to end the war in Iraq will be exploited by the opposition to gain leverage in any political campaign. The war on Iraq had also drained a significant amount of US resources which could otherwise have been channeled to fund domestic programmes to benefit US citizens. At home, there are grouses about expensive health care, inadequate health insurances, poverty, lack of minimum welfare, the subprime housing issue and foreclosures, as well as recession fears lurking around. I think people are wondering if President Bush is concentrating too much on his foreign policy vis-a-vis doing more to address domestic issues at hand. Since Bush's re-election at end-2004, Bush had received increasing criticism. He had high domestic rating immediately after 9/11, but his disapproval rating had since been climbing as the Iraq war dragged on and things are not looking up on the domestic front. So I would say that the Iraq War will in some way influence the outcome of the 2008 Presidential Elections scheduled in Nov 2008.

| | I have to admit that they never could prove the existance of those WMD's and I am still not sure what Bush's real agenda was. It may very well have had to do with oil. I only hope that a workable solution can be found before too many more of our troops die. You are probably right though. At least to a certain extent it will influence the election. | | | |

| | I agree with you that we did not go in nearly strong enough. I also think that there will be severe consequences if the next president pulls troops out too soon like some of them want to do. I believe that we need to finish what we started there, however, I am not sure that we will ever totally stop the terrorist groups. I also wonder if a democratic government will last in Iraq after our troops have come home. Do you think there is a chance that it will last? Also WHO would you like to see elected? Just curious. And P.S. I DO APPRECIATE WHAT YOU DO FOR US AND OUR COUNTRY. More than you know. Be safe! | | | |

| | I think the war is a very important factor because a lot of people want to hear from the new candiates what they ae going to do about the war. 50% wants to end and the other 50% want continue. So what ever choices the candidates make, they will lose the other voters I guess. The war does take too long and as long as americans are there haters will continue to bomb buildings. We have no good solution for this one because both sides don't want to give up. | | | | | | |

| | While it will still play a part in some votes, the Iraq War has largely been played out in the political arena. Realizing now, based on statistics from Baghdad, that the surge is working and that our troops will be there for a while. Other issues such as the economy and immigration are more prominent than the Iraq war. It is not a deciding factor in my voting as I realize that no matter who is elected our troops will still be there and there isn't anything that a President alone can do. Removing our troops will require congressional action, Iraqi governmental action, and even international action. | | | | | | |
