Moral relativism |
|
Is some kind of absolute moral law necessary for any society to progress? Can we really afford to be moral relativist? Why/ why not? I think absolute moral law is necessary for social progress and so we cannot afford to be moral relativist.

1. mac1946 (852) | 9 months ago | And just who would decide what is moral? we already have more than enough stupid laws telling us how we must act,and who says we need this to progress? Sorry, but on this issue,I must disagree with you. good discussion though.

headhunter525 (1132) | 9 months ago | @ mac, But why can't we call those naturally wrongs as moral law? I think there is some sense of moral awareness intituitively. And I would call that moral law. And I would also argue that this sense of the idea of bad or good is hardwired in us. with regards, headhunter525

mac1946 (852) | 9 months ago | while I will agree that there must be some laws to stop those from commiting the worst of the crimes we think of,but I find, the trouble with setting these laws is that those who dictate the laws keep finding more and more "morals"we must obay, there are far to many laws already. this is supposed to be a free country, not a dictatorship, quit telling me how to live my life by someone elses laws. Thank you for the discussion.

headhunter525 (1132) | 9 months ago | If there are more and more laws being added, and that too if many of them are not necessary that would irritate anyone of us. I am not arguing that such thing is good. Definitely we should live a free. And it's a virtue. But argument is that there is at least one moral law. Whether there is hundred or four, that's not my point. My point is that it's not entirely relative. Total moral relativism is not even healthy for a society...that's my point. regards, headhunter525

headhunter525 (1132) | 9 months ago | I quite agree with your observation. If everybody does what one likes then the world will not be a safe place to live. And we cannot differentiate between Mother Teresa and Hitler.

urbandekay (3319) | 9 months ago | Yes, and in extremis it leads to people making the clearly ludicrous claim that all cultures are equal. But I think we can agree that the culture of Nazi Germany is not equal to most cultures all the best urban

headhunter525 (1132) | 9 months ago | And such agreement underscores that morality is not all relative. I think we can all agree that child sacrifice, cannibalism etc are wrong and evil.
