Valentines Party At School  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 94/100. maddysmommy (10969)   ranked 54 out of 2,147 in children 5 years ago

My son's classroom is having a Valentines party on February 14th for about an hour in his class. There will be lots of yummy foods to eat and activities and crafts to do. It may include exchanging of Valentines if each child wanted to bring in something for each student.

I've been thinking about what my son should take as we have never done anything like this before. Do you think a few chocolates or maybe something more healthy, nicely wrapped would be ok? What would you suggest that was ideal for this occasion? Thanks for sharing!

Chocolates would be great. Homemade rice crispies seem to be popular with everyone if you like to make stuff homemade. Or maybe a muffin treat of some type. I am sure whatever you decide to go with everyone will enjoy.

Those are great ideas too - hmm rice crispies I think I can make that LOL even muffins! thanks kykidd!

My son is giving out valentines with the McDonald's coupons in them. I don't know if they have them everywhere or not. Here for $1 you get 12 coupons for free McD's. Each coupon gives the choice of 2 different items like free child drink or free ice cream cone or free apple dippers or free small fry.

Oh wow, I never knew McD's had coupons. Another great idea, thanks lilybug!

my kids all time favorite valentines treats were either conversation hearts or gummi candys. Don't do anything homemade until you check with the teacher, as every school has different rules. Also you might want to check with the teacher about any allergies that might be prevalent in the classroom. I know in my son's class last year, we could not send anything with any form of nut or nut oil in it because one girl was highly allergic.

myLot reputation of 94/100. maddysmommy (10969)   ranked 54 out of 2,147 in children  5 years ago

Thanks for that comment as I just remembered that there are a few kids in his class that are allergic to peanuts and possibly other foods.

I have not heard of conversation hearts or gummi candys. Do they sell them in local grocery stores?

myLot reputation of 80/100. Rozie37 (7134)   ranked 66 out of 2,147 in children  5 years ago

The conversation hearts are sold everywhere. They are in cute little boxes and say things like, be mine, love you, my valentine. They are heart shaped in pastel colors and taste chalky, but they are good. I have a box almost every year. They are the hallmark of children's valentine's in the United States.

myLot reputation of 94/100. maddysmommy (10969)   ranked 54 out of 2,147 in children  5 years ago

Aah they seem like great gifts too. Hmm I'm going to look around for some of those as well, thanks Rozie.

My class at the daycare is all excited because we are having a party too. My kids are bringing all kinds of stuff, but a rule for our center is that it can only be store bought items. It's for safety reasons, but I love me some homemade cupcakes and cookies, so it kinda sucks we can't have that. :P If you want to bring a type of Valentine candy, you would probably want to only bring individually wrapped items or you could put together a treat bag. You could do that for pretty cheap with the help of dollar stores. That's what I'm doing because I have 19 kids in my class. You could also find a cute little toy or something to stick inside the bag. We're also doing the Valentine exchange and the kids are really looking forward to that. We've been working on their bags. Kids make holidays so much fun.

myLot reputation of 94/100. maddysmommy (10969)   ranked 54 out of 2,147 in children  5 years ago

Great ideas Flight. Should I be buying for the whole class or just the girls since Maddy is a boy? my husband was asking this question and I thought that we should buy for all regardless - i mean the list that we received from our teacher says if we wanted to bring a valentine, to bring for all the students in his class.. sorry if this is a silly question LOL never celebrated valentines in schools before!

myLot reputation of 98/100. Flight84 (2181)   ranked 49 out of 2,147 in children  5 years ago

Nah, it's not a silly question! I have my class bring for everyone, just to help possibly avoid hurt feelings, you know? Bringing for everyone will make everyone happy and I know I wouldn't want to break up fights over cards and candy! lol

Thats what I was thinking for all the students and not just the girls but my hubby was thinking otherwise like, boys don't give valentines to boys LOL Thanks flight!

yes i think some light chocolates would be nice. not a full mars bar or anything, but maybe some gold chocolate coins if you have that where you are. or some little heart shaped ones that would fit the occasion nicely.

it's so cute that they are celebrating valentines even at that young age. personally i 'm going to ignore the festival because it's too commercialised and i can celebrate love any day! not necessarily at valentines.

myLot reputation of 94/100. maddysmommy (10969)   ranked 54 out of 2,147 in children  5 years ago

I think i have only celebrated Valentines twice in my lifetime during the early days of dating haha. I think I sent my hubby roses and chocolates only once in our lifetime together. We don't celebrate it now - it really is just a normal day for us but I was happy to hear that his class was having a party - different for me that is.

I might just get the heart shaped ones and something they can also use at school like heart shaped pencils or something like that - thanks squaretile.

Hi,maddysmommy.I think chocolates are good because no one would say no to chocolates on The Valentines.Homemade dishes such as apple pie or vegetable salad are popular for the party, and it is a good chance for you to show your cooking.

myLot reputation of 94/100. maddysmommy (10969)   ranked 54 out of 2,147 in children  5 years ago

I was thinking of homemade cooking but I think there are a few kids in his class that are allergic to certain foords so I have to be careful. Some of the other posters have given some great ideas so I might look into that. Thanks for your comment.

My daughters preschool class is having a similar event.Since alot of the parents bring sweets, my husband and I try not to. For the Halloween party we gave stickers to the class. We found these little Frankenstein cups and put the sticks in them. I've been looking and I think I have found valentine pencils will be cute. There are 16 children in her class. So 3 packs of pencils should do it. and then to go with those, 2 8 packs of plastic slinkies will fit the bill. Dollar stores are great!

myLot reputation of 94/100. maddysmommy (10969)   ranked 54 out of 2,147 in children  5 years ago

I think giving them things to use in school is so much better than giving sweets. I like your idea ersmommy!

There are a couple of different things you could do. Make what I call a goodie bag. You can make those for all kinds of ocasions. All you do is get a small bag and decorate it with what ever holiday it happens to be. Than go to the dollar store or dollar tree store and pick up what they have for the certain holiday. Those stores are good to go to buy for these kinds of things. Have your child make the valentine instead of buying it. Just a couple of thoughts for you. Doesn't cost a lot of money either.

myLot reputation of 94/100. maddysmommy (10969)   ranked 54 out of 2,147 in children  5 years ago

Thanks for those great ideas sunshinelady. Dollar stores are great for these sorts of things and I'm sure I'll be visiting them this week. Thanks again for your comment.

Awww that is so sweet! Your idea sounds lovely - I bet the kids would be thrilled! i have done a similar thing in the past - I found little heart shaped erasers and pencils with lovehearts on them - I thought it was cute and I think my daughters classmates did too! xxx

myLot reputation of 94/100. maddysmommy (10969)   ranked 54 out of 2,147 in children  5 years ago

Oh those are cute ideas mummymo. I have never participated in anything like this before (we never celebrated valentines at school in my day) so its all new to me. I'm going to look for those heart shaped erasers and pencils and do a little goodie bag and add one sweet or something with it.

Question, should I do a bag for each student or just the girls? since its going to be from Maddy my son. I was going to do one for each student then my husband said I should only do it for the girls since its a valentines from Madison - what do you think?

myLot reputation of 96/100. mummymo (11642)   ranked 290 out of 2,147 in children  5 years ago

They didn't celebrate it like that when I was at school either sweety but I think it is so sweet! I guess it depends on what the teacher is trying to achieve - she probably doesn't want anyone left out! I think if you were going for the little goody back I would only really get those for the girls ( boys probably wouldn't be into loveheart things anyway - I know that is a stereotype but I have seen boys who do like this being mercilessly teased even at such a young age) and maybe giving the boys a small sweet or something just so they are not left out. That would probably be my plan anyway! I do hope your son enjoys it. My daughters teacher this year is giving them a small party but wants no gifts , it is my other halfs birthday on Valentines day and she is going to one of her friends birthday parties at the bowling alley after school - it sure is going to be busy! xxx
