How prepared are you for a natural disaster?  |

|  When I was very young my grandmother had a cellar where she stored everything from canned goods to gallon jugs of water and at that time it was just in case we were being bombed and this was going to be our shelter for who knew how long. These days we have to worry more about natural disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes. Depending on where you live there is more likely to be one more than the other.
The first thing they tell us is that we should be able to get in touch with our family so we can meet up somewhere and since most of us have cell phones I think we have that covered. We should also have a duffel bag with the following items in it: * Flashlight
* Battery-powered radio
* Extra batteries for flashlight and radio
* First-aid kit
* Prescription medications
* Copies of the prescriptions
* Eyeglasses
* Copy of eyeglasses prescription
* At least one gallon of water per person in the household
* Enough food that doesn't require refrigeration or cooking (such as nuts, granola bars, canned foods, etc.) to last each family member for three days
* Special items needed for infants (for example, diapers, bottle, bottle warmer, etc.), disabled and elderly members of the household
* Sleeping bag and bedroll or pillow for each member of the household
* Checkbook
* Cash
* Map of the area
* Recent photos of each family member

| |  I know it makes good sense, ctry, but I try not to think in terms of disasters -natural or otherwise. I do have many of those items on hand, although not all in one container. I just try to be optimistic and hope that such a situation never arises. I don't think I've ever discussed any sort of plan with family members. In thinking about all of the suggested items one would need a humongous duffel bag to contain everything.

| |  i posted something similar to this last spring because it was emergency preparedness week, here in canada and i think i maybe got one response...
i bet most people (including myself) are NOT prepared for a natural disaster...

I think this is very good idea to be. I am going to print your list and keep it in visible place during my preparation.
I think we all should be prepare. Global warming can give us big kick at no time to be prepare....

| |  I am not prepared at all. I don't even think about it or worry about it. What ever happens has meaning and I think that if something happens it isn't up to me to change fate or what is supposed to happen to me. I really don't worry about it or think about it. Are you prepared? Do you do what your grandmother does? Do you have that duffel bag full of life saving stuff?
