Gestational Diabetes

I had my second baby in October of last year. During my pregnancy I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I was able to control my blood sugars with diet and didn't require insulin. After my daughter was born the doctors told me that I didn't have to worry about the strict diet anymore. Does this seem weird to anyone other than me? Does the diabetes just go away right after you deliver your baby? Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I am also going through my second pregnancy and was diagnosed with gestational diabetes this time around. Just about entering the sixth month, thus far I am still able to control my blood sugars with diet and exercise.
Every other week I go to a gestational diabetic clinic. The dieticians tell me that this condition will go away soon after birth and that I can eat whatever I want thereafter. However, after six to eight weeks postpartum, I do have to take another glucose test, probably to see if it indeed go away. Apparently those of us who had gestational diabetes have a twenty-five percent higher chance of getting diabetes later on in life. I am told I have to be tested for diabetes every two years for the rest of my life.
I was an athlete and ate mostly healthy before getting pregnant. I am small framed and not obese by any means. Apparently it is the pregnancy hormones that are fighting insulin production, so it does not necessarily mean there was lack of exercise or eating unhealthy.
Yes, it does seem odd that gestational diabetes just goes away. But I am thankful for that! I look forward to eating more bread and rice again!
