During the campaign to get elected as President of the United States each state has a way of selecting people to run. In local and state elections their is a Primary election that cuts down all the candidates for a certain office from the Democratic and Republican political parties.
For the Presidential election it is different in that each state runs it selections on different days and by various methods. They vote for delegates to the national conventions.
On Super Tuesday, in over 20 states, people from the 2 parties decide who they want to run. The states then send representatives to the national conventions during the summer to finalize the results. Since over 20 states have their primary election on this day, it is important because on this day you find out who the front runners are in each party, and you may even have one person have enough delegates to ensure they are the candidate for their party.
I hope this helps you understand better.
