As I'm sure many of you know, its Chinese New Years. Well, a few days ago. So, today the roomie & I were down in a part of town that we don't normally get to, and there's this great Chinese food place there we decided to detour over & eat at. We go there & they had dragons in the parking lot doing the drums & cymbols thing and dancing around. At the end, they came into the restuarant with the long (like 10 people) dragon & danced it thru the place. This way even my roomie could see it since outside it was too bright for her to see well. And, following the long red and silver dragon was a cute little dragon, that a couple of boys about 10-12 were carring. It was really cute! So, what have you done/seen for Chinese New Year?

I am not very familiar with the Chinese New Year, I'm sorry to say. I don't eat alot of Chinese other than chicken fried rice. My husband loves Chinese food though and he could eat it every day.

I couldn't eat it every day. In fact I ate so much of it a few years ago that I got burned out and didn't eat it for something like a year. I've never burned out on Italian food. I think its because I could really only eat a few dishes of Chinese food that gave me the lack of varity that I can get with other style of foods.

I know what you mean. I can eat the chicken fried rice, egg rolls and egg drop soup sometimes and that is about it. I really don't care much for rice. That is my main problem. I crave alot of Mexican food though. I could eat Mexican food just about every day.

I don't do Mexican food. Gee, I wonder why.... Once in a while I'll crave something they only have at mexican restaurants and we'll go, but that's maybe twice a year...

I know Bandera, I've been to Bandera, pretty place. I don't know about downtown Houston, I do know that the Alief area of Houston was where my friend lived and before that my former roommate & I went to a strip center that was all little Vietnamese places and she got a totally cool dragon from a little old man who made them out of clay in the center of an open area. I don't know if I could eat it every day. In fact, we ate so much for a while that I got totally burned out on it and didn't eat it for almost a year. It didn't help that the restuarant near our house had gone so far down hill and the other ones are further away.

In our little town we are luck enough to have 1 chinese place..very small ..not much more then a take out with a couple of tables..And they are the only chinese here..We just don't have the cultural diversity.. Sounds like you had fun. oxoxxoxoxoxo

austin was that way back in the early '60's. infact, the only chinese restuarant was actually run by a hispanaic family... it later became a mexican restuarant before it closed. austin has be come very diverse, with lots of chinese, vietnamese, indian, greek, persian restuarants. I enjoy the different cultures, but have trouble with some food because of my food allergies

ElicBxn it sounds like you had a great time I am glad you went. I am glad they came into the restaurant so your room mate was able to get a look at the dragons. What a neat day you had. I have never lived anywhere where they have much a Chinese New Years Celebration and have never been to a live one. I think I have missed out. Thanks for sharing.

This is the first time I've been that close to an event. I've seen them from the distance, but never so close. I think its a pretty good indication how large the Chinese population is getting in Austin. Funny thing is that I live in an area that's gotten very oriental, but I was all the way on the other side of town to see this!

That would have been amazing. Unfortunately, our little town is a little slow in picking up multi cultural traditions like that.

Austin is a big city. It is the 5th largest city in Texas and, about 15 years ago, my mom said that Austin was the size that Houston was when we moved to Texas (mumbley-mumble) years ago.
