what is the best brand of cat food out there that isnt harmful on cats?  

I feed mine Purina Cat Chow - Indoor Formula
It keeps them from having problems with hairballs and they rarely ever get sick on it. One of them might get sick once a month. Sometimes due to availability, I also use Meow Mix - Indoor Formula. My cats seem to be horribly happy and not too skinny or overly fat. I think they are doing very well on both of them! :) Hope this helps...

My cats used to have blockage issues too. I used to just by them the store brand cat food which turned out to be the reason my cats were getting sick. I took the to my vet and he suggested that I try the Science Diet brand, Control Diet formula. I have been feeding them that for years now and they haven't been sick since!!!

Ever since my cats had surgery, I have fed them both Purina One Adult Cat Urinary Tract Formula and they have never had any more problems. My youngest cat had kidney stones(6)removed, he almost died. So, when my other cat started getting the same symptoms, I took him to the vet right away before he got any kidney stones.

We use Nutro Natural for Indoor Cats. They get the dry all day long and the wet packet or canned of Nturo Natural in the mornings. Any cat food that offers a well rounded diet, low in grains and has no fillers or meat by products is a good cat food.

I don't feed prepared cat food to my cats anymore. I've noticed that they don't digest the cat food that well. You'd see the cat food in their poo. It's a little bit more expensive, but I buy them fresh fish or give them canned tuna with a little rice, plus the every now and then chicken neck. LOL. Also, I've noticed that they're not too fond of liver and when I look at cat food ingredients, I make sure that there is no liver in the ingredients.

I have often wondered what the deal is with the urinary problems in some cats. My mom feeds Science Diet and her cats still have urinary problems. I have always fed my cats Special Kitty from Wal-Mart, and ya know, I never once have had any cats get urinary problems. One lived to the age of 19, when I had to put her down due to blindness and severe arthritis to the extent she couldn't get around the house hardly at all anymore.

So, I will continue to feed the Special Kitty, because it's served my cats well for over 20 years.

But just like people every cat is different, and their bodies are different. It's kind of like asking why your friend gets kidney stones and you don't. Who knows?

urinary blockages are quite common in male cats, especially of a certain breed. In my opinion its not the food that causes the blockage, it`s dried food in general. Cats need alot of fresh water if on a dry food and sometimes its not readily available or the cat just doesnt want to drink. You can buy royal canin for urinary probs, in either dry or pouches. This dry may have low magnesium i`m not sure but royal canin is a good complete cat food.
He could have a narrow urethra also.

We used to free feed dry food until one of our cats was very ill with pancreatitis. Now we serve two meals or either Wellness or PetGuard. Wet food is much better for cats. If you watch your cats do not chew, they just swallow for the most part. The dry food therefore does NOT do anything to tarter on their teeth.

Wellness food is of the quality that could be eaten by humans. They were one of the one during the cat food crisis this year that was not affected. There are no additions of fillers. Pet Guard has rice in it which helped our cats when we had a long seige of Monta Zuma's revenge last year when we brought in a kitten who must have had a parasite.
