Does Freedom of Religion Still Exist in America?

United States

I grew up in a Catholic country. Although our religious beliefs could be practiced publicly, no one was forced to convert to our religion. For example, if mass was said in our school, the non-Catholics and non-Christians were exempted. If another group wanted to build a church, or mosque, in the neighborhood, they were able to do so. So I was quite perplexed when I came here to America. It appears to me that religion is treated here as if it were a crime by Americans. For example, having a moment of silence in public schools is considered a violation of the separation of church and state. How is that so? Is anyone being forced to pray or to convert to a particular religion? Moments of silence are held to remember people who died, but no one objects to that. When I looked into the meaning of "separation of church and state", I found out that when Americans revolted against England, Anglicans had to renounce the King of England as the head of the church, since the king also dictated what church members should and should not believe. So the Episcopalian church was born. It was Anglican in nature but the major difference is that the King of England no longer headed this church. Civil leaders and religious leaders were now separate. Since then, Americans were now free to worship as they please. So why is it that the public display of religion is viewed as coercion to convert to a particular religion? I can't even say "Merry Christmas" anymore to people at work because this was considered wrong. So it seems to me that people here don't have the freedom to express their religious beliefs, which contradicts the American notion of "freedom of religion." Can someone explain why Americans are so hateful of religion?

Don't confuse the Secular Progressives with the rest of this country because they are a small (but growing) group who are very loud and have the backing of the ACLU to help them fight their various causes. The separation of church and state originally meant that the federal government could not impose it's will upon anyone's religious beliefs but that intent has been twisted by radical groups with a very specific agenda for this country. They want everyone to be like them and are trying to force that through legislation. Christians are one of their targets but, as far as the Christmas season goes, the people have stood up to them time and again over issues like Christmas trees (holiday trees) and saying Merry Christmas as opposed to Happy Holidays. Your freedoms are only yours for as long as you protect them so you ARE free to say Merry Christmas and you are free to openly boycot any business that instructs it's employees that they are not permitted to use those words, which is what happened with one store chain this past holiday season. They quickly changed their policy when it became clear that their customers were not going to buy their products if they were going to insult their religious beliefs. I read something in an email about the words In God We Trust being removed from new printings of our paper money. I don't know if this is true or just an urban legion but I do know that, if I am ever handed a bill like this, I will refuse to accept it.

I agree with you completely , But in the same vein....where I go....If you do not pray during the Moment of Silence , or During the Pledge of Allegence...... You are Viewed as Being.....( I want to say Secular , But I think the term is too Mild ) I know it is frowned upon if you do not participate. So....you can love the Same sport , or Activity as anyone else , but as soon as religion enters the arena.....everything gets confused! I agree people should be allowed their Moment of Silence , But during this Moment of prayer....don't worry about me picking my Nose or Talking on my Cell-phone. My views are different from a lot of people's But that doesn't mean that If you're in an accident I will not give you a life saving Blood transfusion , simply because we disagree on Religion and Politics. I don't need to Know what religion you are....I don't Care if you say the Pledge of Allegence......What's important to me is how you treat other people! I am Rogue.....and I AM...............
