Headlights... |

| Tonight was not a good night to be driving home. The weather was horrible and people were not happy. The weather was horrible - rain/sleet/snow. It took a LONG time to get home - over an hour longer than it should have (that was just for me, I was lucky!). One thing that made it worse was that people did not have their headlights on. I started out on my way home at 4:45pm and it wasn't that dark out, I could have started out without my headlights. But, it was raining and we have a law in MD that says you have to have your headlights on if you have your windshield wipers on. I could not beleive the number of people that did not have headlights on. I know that some people were on the road for a few (yes, few, more than 3) hours today. Normally, if you start out at 4pm, you are home before dark, but that was not the case today. It just amazed me that people did not realize they needed to turn on their headlights so that other cars can see them. When do you turn you headlights on in bad weather? Do you know that people can't see you when it's "kinda" dark out? I will turn mine on when 1) I can't see my instrument panel and/or 2) I notice I can't see another car with their lights off. Do you use your "parking" lights instead of your "regular" lights? Do you think this helps? | | | | | |

| | I turn on my headlights early, reinydawn, and one of my vehicles has driving lights that are always on. It really bothers me when I see people driving without lights or even worse, with parking lights burning -- why drive with parking lights? Don't those indicate that you are not moving? That you are, in fact, parked? Another thing that bothers me is when pedestrians walk so close to the highway in the dark. Do people not realize how difficult it is to see them in the dark?? Thanks for providing a forum for me to rant, reinydawn :). | | | | | | |

| | Hey Transdisc, what bothers me worse than pedestrians walking too close to the street at night, is when they cross the street in front of traffic at night! It's bad enough when they do this during the day, but I saw a group of kids almost get hit by a car (not mine), last Halloween because they didn't want to use the crosswalk and they j walked instead. How stupid is that??? I've seen other pedestrians do this as well, though this was the first time I saw a large group of people do such a thing. | | | |

| | Transdisc - When I learned to drive in Colorado it was a law that you had to have your headlights on if your windshield wipers were on, and they've just started that here a few years ago. Not that everyone knows it... The worst part about yesterday was that when most people started out for home they didn't really "need" headlights on, but after a couple hours it was dark and they were still on the road. Sometimes when I've driven before/after/during the dark in one trip I will notice that I can't see my dashboard and will turn the lights on then. | | | |

| | Oh yeah, and I totally agree with the whole parking lights thing - I have no clue why they are even in the car to start with. | | | |

| | Hey sacmom - I know what ya mean, it's hard enough to see cars, but when people are out walking around like that it's very dangerous. When I walk in the mornings and it's still dard out, I make sure I have light-colored clothes on (even though most of the neighborhood knows to watch out for me!). | | | |

| | Hey reinydawn, I wish the people around here would wear light colored clothing or reflective gear so that they can be seen a little easier when it is dark out. It's good to know you wear such clothing. Just keep a watch out for the cars! :) | | | |

| | Oh, I try to steer clear of the cars for my own safety. My husband works for a construction supply company right now and would really like me to wear one of the green reflective vests sometimes! | | | |

| | Hi reinydawn! I turn my headlights on immediately as soon as I turn the car on. I have them on all the time, dark or light out. I few months ago I lost my glasses temporarily and one day had to drive to work without them. It was very, very scary. Everything was a blur. The cars that had their lights on, all I could see was their lights. The cars that did not have their lights on, I could not see them at all. | | | | | | |

| | I remember years ago when they first came out with the cars whose lights were always on, the commercials were pretty cool because they showed the same car driving around a bend at the same time of day (dusk) once with the headlights and once without them. It was amazing how much easier it was to see the one with the headlights on. I don't know why all cars have that feature. It seems like they even did away with it, because I don't know that I see them any more. | | | |

| | I do not very often drive far. But even if I am only going to the shop 5 minutes away and it is raning heavily I turn My headlights on. the thing that gets me is, why in daytime hours do people have to drive with their lights on highbeam. Don't they realise it hurts your eyes as much as it does at night. Another point also. Why in inclement weather do people find the need to speed. After it has not rained or snowed for a few months the conditions change enormously. Rain brings oil to the surface, and makes the roads slippery. I am not sure what snow does, but it cannot be good. | | | | | | |

| | Hey Goodie, I'm one of those people that drive with my headlights on during the day, but I don't use my highbeams. I haven't seen anyone around here do that, so I had no idea it could be so blinding during the daytime. Thanks for the heads up! | | | |

| | Hi Sacmom, I think it is actually worse in the day then it is at night. I think people forget they have them on highbeam and in the morning do not even think to check. | | | |

| | I don't use my high beams at all, they actully make it harder for me to drive. I also hate having to switch back and forth for traffic so I just don't use them. I know that some people will use thier high beams when their headlight is out, they're just too lazy to get it changed. Actually, the people who leave their high beams on are basically just lazy too! | | | |

| | I do use my highbeams, though only when there is very light to no traffic out. I drive on country roads and there are a lot of animals that come out at night. I almost hit a possum a few months ago because I just about didn't see him due to not having my high beams on. Since I saw something moving across the road I slowed down and put them on (don't worry, there was no on coming traffic. Heck, there wasn't any traffic! LOL) I was shocked to see the possum and I remember he looked directly at me! It freaked me out! LOL | | | |

| | I don't understand why some people do this when they drive. Maybe it's because they figure if they can see without using their headlights then they can be seen by other drivers too. I'm pretty sure it's the law here in CA to drive with the headlights on during the day (and of course at night too) when the weather is bad. Unfortunately there are still a lot of people around here that don't turn on their headlights during such weather. This can be dangerous as cars can become almost, if not completely, invisible by others! I never use my parking lights as headlights, though I have seen other drivers do this. I believe it is illegal to drive this way, at least here. As transdisc said they are meant for parked cars, not cars that are driving down the road. I always have my headlights on when I drive, day or night, rain or shine. I even wrote a discussion about it a few months ago. :P | | | | | | |

| | I can't stand when people cross the road at night either, sacmom. And I've seen the same thing you mentioned -- whole groups taking their time to cross as if it's broad daylight and they are easily seen when they, in fact, are barely seen. | | | |

| | You've got that right - people think you can see them if they can see without their lights on. I think yesterday there was more than normal though because we were on the road for hours when it's not normally that long. When people started out it was lighter out (even though it was raining and they should have had the lights on anyways). Then as it took a couple hours to get home they never realized they didn't have the lights on. I don't understand how they see their meters when their lights are out - maybe that's when they turn the "parking" lights on, to see their meters??? | | | |

| | Look if all of us follow the rules and instructions well then the accident not happens to us. But there are the lazy or the persons that not pay attentions in the bad weather by not on the headlights of their car can cause problem. You should have to complaint for tight the security in the bad weather. | | | | | | |

| | The emergency people were plenty busy last night with accidents - that's one of the reasons it took me an hour longer than it should have to get home. I'm sure on a normal night, they would have gotten pulled over and ticketed for not having their lights on. It is very dangerous. | | | |

| | We have the same law here in PA. I use my regular headlights, and I normally have them on when it is just cloudy or overcast. It has been proven that you are more visible to other drivers if you have your lights on, even on sunny days. It was a mess up here too, we had 3+ inches of snow and then ice on top of that, my s/o stayed at his mom's overnight, she is only about 6 blocks from where his station is, so he didn't have to worry about driving home and I didn't have to worry about him being out on the roads with other drivers. | | | | | | |

| | Unfortunately, I was in Baltimore last night - about an hour from the office, which is about half an hour from home. I should have left my appointment earlier, but I didn't want to have to drive back up there again later in the week, so I stayed. | | | |

| | That is a great law that your lights need to be on if your windshield wipers are on! It makes a lot of sense. I decide to put my lights on in the same manner you do. If I have a hard time seeing other cars I am sure they are having a hard time seeing me. I don't use my "parking" lights ever. I am kind of an all or nothing type person. I've never understood what good the parking lights do, to be honest. | | | | | | |

| | Well, if they see you, they can pull you over. I know in some states they actually do do it, but I'm not sure about here. I remember hearing a comedian once say everyone should be given those dart guns that have suction cups. Every time you see someone doing something stupid in traffic, you shoot their car with it. Then when the cop sees them, if they have so many darts on thier car, they get pulled over for being stupid. I like that concept! | | | |

| | My car has day lights that say on and when it is dusk or rainny the lights automaticly turn on. I do not have to worry about my light in my car. I say but I do not drive any more I do have a nice car. I do not understand why people are not safer when they drive. Lets use common sense and turn our lights on in the rain or when in doubt, it does not use any more gasoline. | | | | | | |

| | That is so true! I think of it as defensive driving. If I can make sure I am visible to others, it's less likely that they'll hit me... | | | |

| | In Maryland it is state law that you have to have your headlights on if your windshield wipers are on, no matter the time of day it is. And yes the weather was bad yesterday, and not much better tonight although it was rain and it didn't freeze , but that could change tonight as the temperature is supposed to drop below freezing. If my wipers are on, I turn the headlights on. Mooch | | | | | | |

| | Ugh, I am so glad this week has not had a repeat of Tuesday. That was just horrible! And I'm around Annapolis, where a LOT of problems were happening. When the weather is bad, you'd think that people would be extra cautious... But not here!!! Hopefully it's time for spring, I'm tired of this already... | | | |
