Do you know the story of Smokey Bear (and why it's not THE bear)?

Did you know the cartoon Smokey Bear is based upon an actual baby black bear that was found alone, charred, and scared after a devastating wildfire burned through New Mexico?
One spring day in 1950 in the Capitan Mountains of New Mexico, an operator in one of the fire towers to the north of the Capitans spotted smoke and called the location into the nearest ranger station. The first crew discovered a major fire being swept along the ground between the trees, driven by a strong wind. Word spread rapidly and more crews reported to help. Forest Rangers, army soldiers, men from the New Mexico State Game Department, and civilian volunteers worked together to gain control of the raging fire. As soon as they contained the fire to one spot, the wind would push it across the lines. During one of the lulls in firefighting, a report of a lonely bear cub who had been seen wandering near the fireline was reported. The men left him alone because they thought the mother bear might come for him.
Several soldiers were caught directly in the path of the fire storm, barely escaping by laying face down on a rockslide for over an hour until the fire had burned past them. In spite of the experience, the firefighters were safe except for a few scorches and some burned holes in their clothes.
You can check out this link to find out why it's not Smokey THE Bear if you're interested:

When I went to that site I noticed something else different. I noticed it said "Only You Can Prevent Wildfires" and I recall it always being said "Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires". Funny how things change over time. I also like Smokey THE Bear better than Smokey Bear but it is interesting to know little facts like that, never know when something like that might come up on trivia.

I've been thinking about that for years since they changed it. As long as I can remember it was Forest fires and then they changed it. I think it has something to do with the wild fires they always have in CA but who knows.

Well who knew, I did not know all those things about Smokey The Bear. Interesting to learn all these little facts. I really had no idea it was because of a real bear. It is also interesting to note how tings have changed over the years. fun discussion.

I grew up knowing about Smokey, ctry, but I had never heard of just how he came into being. He is an American Treasure. I remember when there were posters of him all over the place. Thanks for the story setting the facts straight.

Actually I did know all of this. At work I do a weekly trivia type thing and so I know a lot of stupid random facts. I did a Smokey Bear question many months ago and my office manager, who reviews the trivia before I submit it...tried to correct me saying it was Smokey the bear and another office mate tried to tell me if I didn't say "Smokey the bear" than no one would know who I was talking about. I won the battle.
Bambi was in their campaign way back in the beginning where they got their idea to use an animal. But since they could only use the deer for a short period of time as Disney had loaned it to them and Disney only owned the rights for one year. It was after they used Bambi as a successful animal Mascot that they decided to use the bear.
I also know that the Smokey Bear campaign is the longest running Public Service Campaign in history (as it's running on 64 years now).
Random knowledge is my forte.
