Changing Colors!

Pepi Black and White - What Happened!
United States
March 6, 2008 7:21am CST
My black and white chihuahua's fur is changing colors. I have been noticing over the past few months a brownish tinge to his coat now he is a very dark brown and white with a black stripe down his back. As a a pup he he was jet black and he will be 2 years old next month. I have had many dogs but have never seen this happen before. I asked around and someone said that he must be mutating (??) and I must live close to a nuclear plant. I check this out and I live pretty close to two plants. One is 88 miles south/east and the other 106 miles north/west from where I live. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? Should I be concerned?

Lady and Missy - Lady is changing her colors too on her back from tan to black
I don't think there's anything to worry about. I have a puppy chihuahua mix and she's going from tan to black on her back. Her sister is black and tan so maybe she's trying to look like her? lol But it is something to see though. Kind of makes you wonder, what's going on with my dog?? lol

Hell! Excuse my language, but when I read the first few sentences, I thought.. maybe that was just the breed of dog. I have never heard dog dogs colours changing, except when very aged. When I read the bit about you living near two nuclear plants, I was a bit stunned. If it is radiation causing these mutations in your dogs colour, I would be concerned. Very concerned. If not for yourself, then for pregnant women living in the area. Is there a way you can get your vet to test for radiation in your dog? If not, can they test for genetic changes? I guess the latter would cost a fair bit. It might be worth loking into. If you & your vet can prove that only radiation could have caused these changes in your dog, then you could be onto something big. Very big.

Thank you both for your comments. I spoke with my vet last night and she first said that is was a very good question as in her opinion the government does not let us know the full extent of what the results can be from living close to nuclear power plants. However she does not believe it has anything to do with Pepi's color change. Transdisc you are correct we do not live close enough to the plants for to to be a factor. If this was a problem she would have seen the effects among her very large animal clientele. She know Pepi to be a healthy, happy little guy and thinks it is just some stray genes kicking in. She also said there are many breeds of dogs who have subtle color changes for no apparent reason. So I am very relieved.

Could it be a vitamin deficiency?

My dog is mostly brown, but has some white and black. He was born with a wide black stripe from the base of his neck to the tip of his tail. Right now he has only two inches left of the black stripe on his tail. Over the past year the black has totally gone away and is replaced by the brown color. I don't live near anything hazardous and my dog is in perfect health. If the nuclear plant had affected your dog, I suspect it would have just killed your dog, not just change the colors.

I think you are correct. It has never affected any of my other dogs and my vet says he is healthy. So perhaps it is just a strange occurrence similar to what happened to your dog.

Wow...how interesting. No I have never heard of anything like this. In regard to the nuclear power plant and the question of whether it could cause your dog to mutate or not is a good one. How you would find about is not something I have a clue about. If it were our pet I'd be calling the vet and running the changes by him/her. Then I'd get on the internet and see what I could find out. Good luck with it..I know how much you love your animals. I hope his is OK. Please keep us updated. My thoughts are with you. Raia

I had a dog 6 years ago, she was a labrador crossed with a rottweiler, and she was black and tan, her fur started to turn gingery brown as time went on. Maybe he is just changing colour, sometimes they change colour due to age, but as he is only 2 I wouldnt have thought it was that. I certainly wouldnt think he was mutating whoever told you that watches too much of the simpsons ha ha!! I am not sure if there are any dangers or side effects from living close to a nuclear plant, but it would be worthwhile looking into it.

I would not be concerned. A lot of different breeds do this when they get older. They are like us. We get older and change do we!!

I never heard of that other than animals can change colours, but being near a nuclear plant, and mutation it is best to ask your vet about that.

I would ask a vet but I doont think the plants are close enough to do any thing heck I have lived with in a couple of miles from them and nothing ever happed like that to dogs.
