Rep. Paul Broun, at a House Homeland Security Committee markup of the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Act of 2008, used the opportunity to fear-monger on immigration, claiming that “roughly 40 percent” of undocumented immigrants are “not Mexican.” Many of them, he said, are of “Middle Eastern” or “Asian” origin and pose a “national security problem.” He added, “I don’t think they’re coming here to cut our grass or work in our chicken plants.”

Now, it would be one thing if he were even remotely close with that 40% figure but he wasn't, unless you think 7% that are not Mexican (OTM for "Other Than Mexican") and three-hundredths of 1 percent who ASICs, or “Aliens from Special Interest Countries” — most anywhere in the Middle East and a chunk of South Asia - as "close" to 40%. We know there are those who want to fill us with fear to protect the status-quo, but does anyone else here think this is outrageous and should be called upon? Rep. Broun was last night's "Worst Person in the World" according to Countdown's Keith Olbermann and I think he nailed it right on the head. Comments?

There are a large number of Mexicans that feel they should have the territory that the US captured during the Mexican American war and the state of Texas. These people are athreat to National Security.
I think that we need to seal the borders and control who gets in to this country. According to the Center for Disease Control because of the illeagle immigrants we are facing several new diseases and conditions that we have no treatment for that could soon spread quickly across this country. This is a threat to our national security.
What about the Gangs that are taking over some cities. This is a threat to our national security.
I do not care if it is 4%, 40% or 400% we need to secure our borders and protect ourselves from these threats. That said we also need to provide a smootherp[ath to citizenship for those who want to come here and be productive citizens.

I'm sorry, apparently I should have chosen a different title to this discussion because you didn't read the whole post through, or so it would appear. He said 40% are immigrants not from Mexico and are a security threat. I agree something needs to be done about illegal immigration, don't get me wrong here, I just don't think it's one of our top concerns right now. There are gangs taking over not only our cities but also our small towns and they are not all Mexican, in fact most of them are not and most of them aren't illegal immigrants. My point of this post was the untruths told by Rep. Broun in order to instill even more fear into the American people. Do you think this misrepresentation of the facts is acceptable?

If we are going to be successful in changing things we have to deal in facts. It is wrong to use inflated figures trying to make your point. He could have made his point if the number had been 4%. I agree with you we need to deal in the truth.

This is not surprising to me in the least. They had already announced that Al-Quieda terrorists had come over here and were trained by us to beat us. They are every where in America, just waiting to carry out hteir mission.
I do not think that very many remember when bin Laden said that if Bush were re-elected, we would have trouble. Well, I am glad that it has not happened so far. But with all the undocumented immigrants over here, anything could happen at any time. We are wide open for all kinds of trouble.
