do you think we should abolished using plastic in our daily lives?

i just replied to a post and decided to have my own based on my answer to her.
we have a family friend who is constant worrier about having cancer so she drinks green tea, take multi vitamins, exercise and even take some preventive medicines YET i always see her using plastics in reheating food in microwave, uses a lot of msg, when she make green tea in a pitcher she pours boiling water to that plastic pitcher. it just dont make sense.
i mean we all know that plastic plays an important role in having cancer. they even made studies about it. i even watched a news in CNN that plastic can cause other diseases and we should avoid using them as much as possible.
i am trying, if i have to store foods in fridge i try to use stainless or ceramic but then when i freeze the food i used those freezer vacuum plastic.
do you think scientist or government should do something about it?
not sure if my understanding is correct but will be happy to hear your side and learn from it.
there might be issues that make sense to me and maybe you can make me rationalize with it.
i know plastic is the cheapest material to use but my mind is saying that we have bright minds out there who can come up with a better product that they can introduce to us and make us use it instead of plastic.
thanks a lot!

plastic is of different grades according to the utility. plastic cover/bag gradation is in micron units and somewhere near 30 microns is defined harmful for the ecosystem. it is not biodegradable and so it cannot be disposed or burned. moreover burning can emit poisonous fumes which can pollute the atmosphere and even lead to global warming.
so the real danger is for mother earth. banning plastic is the realisation of a dream but a suitable alternative as a substitute should be discovered that can impose no harm to our environment and us.
plastic containers should be banned as other alternatives are there in market in the form of clay , aluminium , stainless steel , glass , porcelain etc . so banning these is a necessity as plastic is harmful especially when coming into contact with heat. it can dissolve in minute proportions and merge into the hot food and cause health problems.

hi definitelyarun,
cool info! haha im not into science so i enjoy reading stuff like you said.
yes, one of my concern is the fact that we cannot really disposed a plastic and just recycled them (i wonder if that can cause problems too coz they have to be melted and becomes another form again) and it affects our world, i have seen the effects of flood in the philippines and china and some other countries in asia just because they throw plastic everywhere and clogged the drainage.
i really wish a earth-friendly company will come up with a better idea. i like the fact that now a days some company are standing for what is right and good for the earth (energy saving company, organics, think green, hybrids, nanotech)
so hopefully one day there will be an answer for us.
we can still use plastic but with moderation and carefulness not because it harm ourselves but because it is for the best for all of us.
thanks for your info.

I don't think plastic should be banned, but it should be used wisely.we were so used to plastic bags in india.one day the government stopped plastic bags and asked us to use paper or jute bags.this happened because there were floods.it becae very difficult to buy things,we had to catch things in our hand and come home.

haha,. i can imagine you guys buying stuff and having it all in hands (im kidding!) it is very hard to buy heavy stuff and just use paper bags (except if you prefer to use boxes) so i believe that plastic is very useful in this way. philippines and other asian country have the same problem bout plastic being the cause of floods coz their people doesnt know how to properly managed them, also the government is not that forceful of making it as a law so no one will throw garbage anywhere they want.
like i said plastic is very useful and the cheapest there is but i hope someday there will be someone who can come up with a far better idea that is not harmful to us and our environment as well.

Maybe we can start doing so, however maybe this was not possible cause they have not found anything better that can actually replace the use of plastics - basically in everything. Also, there is quite a problem in cost. Maybe plastics are so much cheaper than anything else. Like for groceries, others use recycled papers, etc - but in our country, plastics are used because recycled papers are costly.

i really wish there is another way round and some one will really come up with a better invention that will benefit us all. yes plastic, so far, is the cheapest there is to use. papers can be used in groceries but we cant really store (direct) liquid on it. beside if we used too much paper we are harming our trees, although we recycled almost most of it still, there is a huge part of trees being used.
glass will be nice but the fact that it is fragile and you cant really freeze 'em and they are quite heavy compared to plastic, maybe they can come up with a kind of glass that can be used same as plastic (talking about containers), haha my idea seems to be crazier, oh well!

Plastic is not only responsible for cancer, but i think for many more things. it is proven to be bad for environment. earlier there was not so much of use.But it has come out as cheap alternatives to many nature friendly things. we should abolish but then we need better alternatives.

i dont say that plastic is the main cause for cancer, sure there are lots of reason why it happen (genes, food, pollution, habits, etc.) plastic is really bad not because it can be one of the cause of cancer but because it harms our world as well (specially to those who dont know how to properly disposed them) but like you said (and we all know) that it is the cheapest one to use and so far that is all we have till one will stand and come up with something new for us to use.
i hope!

I think totally abolishing the use of plastic may lead to more environmental problems... since we would have to cut more trees and mine more iron ore to create substitute products for the plastic... the solution maybe to limit... because plastic is not at all that bad...
We just need to be more careful in the kind of plastic that we should use... and how to dispose of them properly...
If give the choice between using a paper bag and a platic bag... i would rather use the plastic bag...

i have thought the same and even replied to one poster here the same stuff. not sure bout making it more difficult to come up with a better substitute of it (plastic) but i am hoping that maybe they can come up with something that will make plastic or another cheap product not that harmful in some ways.
yes, i love to use plastic bag rather than paper bags specially if i have to carry heavy stuff but if i have to choose between a plastic bag and a cloth bag i will use the cloth bag instead coz i can use it over and over again without worrying it being tear up easy compared to plastic.
i agree that we should come up with a better way of disposing them. i think our government is doing good bout waste management now a days, i hope other countries do follow too.

i dont think abolishing is the answer. smeone else said that scientists might come up with something new, but it culd turn out to be far worse than what we have now. they used to think saccharine was FABulous.. then they got rid of it cause it caused cancer and went to nutrasweet, which theyve since gotten rid of because it causes the same symptoms as MS and was paralyzing people and are now on this kick of splenda.. which im sure down the line will be found to do something else to people thats horrible. eggs are good for you ,nope wait, theyre terrible for you, nope, sorry, theyre good for you again.. the mind boggles with all of the back and forth of whats OK and what isnt. i dont cook in plastic. even those lil microwaveable frozen thingies, i pop out of the container they come in and either put it into a baking dish in the oven or a glass plate/bowl before i nuke it. mainly tho, i do it because i cant stand the taste of it in the plastic. same reason i drink beverages out of glass bottles over cans/plastic. i think if you spend yer entire life worrying over whats gonna make you sick possibly 50 years from now, yer wasting 50 years. stick by the adage of moderation.. and ya should do aiight.

hi tessah.,
thanks for giving your side, there is always news that contradicts one another so we dont really know what is real from what is not. sometimes they lie just so they can get the profit out of it. yes i heard all this stuff regarding the sweetener. my husband use to complain about this great natural sleeping pills (i forgot the name) and he says it works wonderfully to humans and helps to give the normal sleep needed but then one pharmaceutical company complain and says it is very harmful so they file a complain and being a bigger company (more lobbyist to get money from) the government says yes it is bad for us just because they get more money from it.
i dont like drinking in plastics too, they sure change the taste of whatever is inside of it specially if you're just drinking plain water, i can taste the plastic and that leaves a bad taste on my mouth.
no i dont worry too much, i just like to understand and learn, like i said i heard stuff in the news or on the internet and sometimes it confuses me coz the information seems to contradict at times so id like to know much about it.
i guess there is a difference of wanting to know the answers and worrying, and i believe that my intention to most stuff in life is learning.
i love to live my life to the fullest not the fool-est, haha!
i enjoy hearing your opinion, it sure helps me thinks more.

I think it is more of the matter that maybe it should be investigated to see the cons of plastic and maybe it should be made safe, with all the technology today a better alternative should be able to be produced..as far as the cancer scare is that if we listened to every report that comes out to what causes cancer we wouldn't eat, drink or move out of our house...I did a vegetarian cooking class some years ago and the chef was telling us that the biggest cancer food is actually meat but Governments won't admit to it because there is too much money riding on the back of the animals we eat...another friend who works in the x-ray department of a hospital backed this statement up saying it took him one day working in this area , after seeing what meat does to our bosies to make him give up meat....so I guess we just need to eat everything in moderation and be as happy as we can be for the time we have and most of all stop worrying which is also not good for us....

great idea! i wish there is a company who will really look for an answer like that and who will care more (not that i am saying they dont) but often most companies make products not because it is good for our consumption or usage but because they make the most money out of it (a great example is what you stated as well as the pharmaceutical companies)
i have tried to be vegetarian but i didnt make it, haha my sister do that once in a while and there is a point in her life that she becomes very repulsive regarding meat and just makes her tummy really upset i told her sometimes our mind plays tricks on us and it is very powerful that it can control our actions.
i haven't read much about meat being the cause of cancer yet but my husband keeps telling me that pork is healthier than beef (i dont eat pork) so i shouldnt be brain washed as well (haha).
anyway, moderation is really important. sometimes we hear or read something telling us not to do it but sometimes whoever says it have propaganda going in and that confuses people (talking about big companies) so if someone wants to follow it or do something it is best to take it not too much and just keep his thoughts on positive side and be happy and dont worry too much.
thanks for giving your view.
appreciate it

I once worked in as accountant in a plastic factory, which produces polythene bags. As we all know it is made from a petroleum by product and can be considered toxic. During the time I was working there a campaign went on to ban the use of polythene in Sri Lanka. The opinion of everyone was considered. The main argument of the anti polythene crusaders was the harm it was doing to the the environment.
But knowing and working among polythene all the time we pointed out that the most environment friendly packing material was polythene. For instance if we used paper to lift the weight that is lifted by polythene bags how many trees will have to be felled to meet the demand. We proved with figures that the result would be catastrophic.
The point was that because it is cheap people liberally throw it around and they clog drains etc. But this is because proper disposing methods are not used. It can also be recycled very easily. As for plastic containers, they can get mixed with the food for the heat. This is very minute in quantity. We might be breathing more carbon monoxide during the day. Also other containers can also release minute particles of atoms into the food.

hello joseph,
very good input and i cant help but give you the best response (thank you!)
yes, i agree with you that plastic is not the real culprit here but the human themselves. i have been to different country in the past (though most of them are asia) i have to say that the main problem is people not minding their waste. i think the only place in this world that impress me the most when it comes to cleanliness is singapore (based on place i have been).
it is sad that we blame everybody BUT ourselves.
i do my best to recycle and not throw anything harmful in the environment.
i also dont like to waste papers as i know thousands of trees needs to suffer coz of that.
i know that they are finding ways to use bamboo in so many ways and i hope they can come up with something very very useful using bamboo. as we all know bamboo came from grass family and grows so fast and can be planted almost anywhere in the world.
if we could harvest them (as much as we can) it wont be a problem nor will it be extinct coz of its ability to grow fast so i feel they are best one to really focus now.
anyway, plastic makes our lives easy i just wish we are more responsible with our action and not endanger not only our lives but most of all our world.
again, thanks for your wonderful post - appreciate it a lot!

It would cost quite a bit to get rid of plastic containers, if you do believe that storing food in glass and ceramics is much better. It also could be that your friend is ulta sensitive. I do not mean that she thinks she is sensitive, but she really is. It is kind of like the story of the princess and the pea. Some do not feel the pea hidden under several down mattresses, but there is one that will. Now I would never make green tea in a pitcher because I make it hot. And I take multi=vitamins, although not the ones recommended for people over fifty, because they do not contain iron, and I am slightly anemic.
I do feel it is all right to store things in plastic, but when I heat them up, I transfer the food into a ceramic or glass container. So it is all right to freeze in plastic, just do not heat the food in them.
You just have to be sensible.

yes, it will cost too much to get rid of 'em that's why they are very abundant coz they are very cheap and easy to manufacture. i am not sure if she is that sensitive based on how i see her (lifestyle and eating habits) she just do stuff based on what she sees on tv or what she read on the internet, she is the kind of person who believes whatever she read or saw without looking for facts - easy to brainwash (my husband used to tease her that way)
she is a very wonderful person and we do love her as our family friend.
i think multi-vitamins are good but i dont drink them like everyday coz my body is not used to it i get sick easy i dont know why. i am anemic my self but i cant take too much iron coz it's hard for me to do my morning business (lol) coz of it.
i never reheated stuff in plastic and like you i transfer it on ceramic plates or glass, i feel it is healthy that way.
thanks for posting!

Plastics are definitely suspect in many areas..the plastic grocery bags will forever be in our land fills as they cannot biodegrade..recycling is the only answer to the plastics that are already in the world..and many people just aren't informed well enough to properly dispose/recycle things. It is very easy to taint an entire recyle bin with products which mix with and undermine the ability of the recycler to do his job.
When I grocery shop, I take 10 recycled sturdy bags, some cotton, some canvas, some made of recyled plastic...I then can easily carry my groceries from the car to the house without tearing/ripping plastic bags..I can carry much more weight than in paper..and for me the beauty is that I can reuse the same bags every time I shop. I even have begun taking a very attractive bag when I go shopping for clothing ...it is portable in my purse/car and it is stronger and reusable. The department store I shop at has commented many times that they would love people to do this so they could cut the use of plastic/paper....it is only my little attempt at making myself feel like I'm no longer adding to the landfill things that my great grandchildren will have to deal with!!!
I agree about the stress...it can destroy your body and your mind...but I don't stress over these issues...just problem solve for myself and what I as one person can do...no stress involved.
We have ignored the environment for many years.and have information that can help change the toxins we put into our atmosphere each day...if we can each do one little thing different to improve a condition, I see a better world ahead...it doesn't have to be a huge change we make in our lives..just a single positive change...and it will multiply..Have a great day..Be well..

very well said, i completely agree with you 101% :)
kidding aside, i love the fact that despite what's going on now there is always one soul who is willing to make a difference one single action at a time. i believe as well that it is hard to change the whole world but if we can just do one at a time and hope someone will do the same, over time we can accumulate an amount enough to make a huge difference in our world.
i like to do the same thing of reusing plastic/paper bag. i even think that it is best to use cloth bag coz you can reuse it over and over again and it is much stronger than plastic and paper.
like i said in my previous post, i admire that HK is doing a change in their country by forcing people to reuse bags when they go shopping, there is nothing bad on the way they force it coz they get incentives in doing so.
i wish they do the same here in US knowing this is far ahead country compared to the other ones in asia (no offense meant, just stating a fact on my side).
so much to blame when it comes to cancer or sickness not just plastic.
but like you, if we really want to make a change in our lives and in our world we should start it on our own and not wait for the government or be forced to do the change.
again, thanks for a very nice post!

I don't think getting rid of plastic is the answer. For every study that says plastic emits harmful substances, there is one that says it is harmless. Even if it is harmful, there are plenty of other things that are a lot worse. Like air and water pollution. Smoke, smog, car emissions, to name a few. Plastic is synthetic. When it first came out it was the best thing since sliced bread. Now, after years of using it and seeing its effects, we are seeing that there may be problems with it. If scientists came up with something new, it may seem great at first, but before long there will be problems with it.
The bottom line is everything has the potential to be harmful. All we can do is use our best judgment. All things in moderation. Use natural products whenever possible.

true often times we see that such answer is the best for that moment and later realize that it is not really.
there's so much going right now in this world that affects our lives/health and really to me we just have to focus and be less stressed coz it is important.
my husband always tell me the same stuff, use everything in moderation so it wont be that harmful and enjoy it without worrying bout the harmful effects, kinda like eating too much and becomes obese when i feel they can still eat what they crave for but not too much.
anyway, thanks for the time replying! appreciate it.

I think it is ridiculous to take all those supplements to prevent cancer if you are using all the other things that cause it. There is nothing wrong with taking the preventative measures, but using the plastic products should also be avoided.I don't know much about how plastic works, but I do know that cancer has become much more prevalent in recent years. Before refrigeration, they didn't get food until they used it so they didn't need to use plastic and you couldn't use plastic to cook over a fire so it was not a problem. Now people are so into convenience that they forget about what problems that convenience may cause them.

good morning early bird :)
i always think the same way and have to giggle everytime our friend preach over being careful about plastics and cancer and all that then see her do the opposite, just dont make sense to me - completely!
i dont take much multi-vitamins coz for some reason my body dont like something like that. i guess im blessed with a much better immune system and dont need anything to boost it again. except of course when i move in china and get sick like 3x a month. i thought i got sars or bird flu one time, scare the !@#%6 out of me, haha!
i like the samples you gave, didnt think like that till you mention it.
i dont like to do short cuts really coz i feeel i am getting too lazy doing stuff our of convenience, back in my hometown and in china we are used to walking then here in US like 1 meter and you have to use your car, how silly is that! haha
i love to walk i guess and others are just used to what ever you call it.
in our days now we always have complications of what a normal sickness is before. dont know if it's a fact but i am just talking about myself. if i have head ache my mom will always ask me to take advil or aspirin if i do that my headache will be gone but i will have a tummy ache for a long time. so as much as possible i avoid taking anything (not that i am saying it is wrong though) so i have a thought that maybe some sickness comes up from what other medication we are taking (i hope no one will rock me for this)
anyway, thanks for dropping by!
i hope you have a wonderful weekends out there!

i said you're an early bird coz when i got your response it was like 3 or 4pm here and since you are in china i assume that is early in the morning but for some reason you said it is afternoon when you respond to it, that is very strange, maybe i got it late, oh well!
i have been sicked in china and that is something i dont want ANYBODY to experience it is not a fun thing and believe me i thought i will die just because of the language differences.
we have an american doctor after a horrible experience but boy it is way too expensive just to have a check up, for some one who dont have an insurance it is such a pain in the pocket.
i hope you dont get sick there ever and hope that all is well with you.
exercise helps us a lot, we ride bikes too and it is fun except of course when someone pushed you then you end up being frustrated (bad for your heart, haha)

I'm not sure why you consider me to be an early bird. I am usually up until about midnight and most of my responses are before then. It is 3:45 pm right now. I have been spending a lot of time trying to take care of other things this past few days so I am trying to get caught up with other people's responses to me.
I think I have been lucky here the past couple of years. I haven't had any more than colds or mild flus. I hope that I am able to remain healthy because it would be no fun getting sick somewhere where people do not understand me. I hope that when (if) I return to America, that I stay away from driving because cars are not good for our health. I think it would be better to use either walking or riding a bike for short distances.
