There is a little local coffe shop that I have frequented for the past 2 yeears and, in my humble opinion, they serve the best coffe in town. Found out today that they will be closing permanently in the next couple of weeks. It's sad to see great places like that close and watch as Starbucks, with it's horridly overpriced drinks, goes from strength to strength. Any of you guys run into something similar?

Yeah, there was a great coffee shop in Malibu that was bought out by Starbucks. I was disappointed. I am a big believer in supporting local "Mom and Pop" business over the chains. I'm hoping that one day we can turn the tide and get back those small businesses.

We've had many local small locally owned coffee shops close here too. It's sad. I do think that, like most any other business, they get outsold by the big conglomerates. Starbucks is a good coffee and it is definitely overpriced but people are going for it. Kind of odd but something about their marketing works!

yeah.. i agree starbucks is everywhere and yes.. their coffees are overpriced! i can have the same coffee and taste in one local that is about 50% lower in price. i wish more people will support small businesses so they will be stable for a long time. i am sure you will miss that coffee...

We are overrun with coffee shops; everything thinks that they are "so cool" to hang out at. I am not all that picky about my coffee but I will only splurge for a Venti Mocha Frappuchino once a month as my treat when I get paid from the internet sites that I frequent. Starbucks shops are almost everywhere; if you ever listen to The Onion there was a new blurb stating "In local news a Starbucks opens in the bathroom of an existing Starbucks". No mater how many times I hear that or think about it I still have to laugh.

I can top that. We have a strip mall (a mall with all stores outside for those who know know what one is) there is a grocery store with a Starbucks and right next door to it a full serve Starbucks. Their ideology on it is that the one inside the grocery store is smaller and independently owned. Then, five stores down, there is a Barned & Noble with a Starbucks in it. Three of them in one tiny little corner of the strip mall. You are right, it is getting out of control!

Yes. We can watch Starbucks everywhere all around the world. They put Starbucks in the Palace in China. I think they take an inappropriate expansion, what make some weak coffee bar be closing. But it promote the development of the whole society.

I agree with you, it is sad to see the "mom and pop" smaller buinesses run over by the bigger conglomerates. It is happening everywhere with coffee shops, building supply companies, local small grocery stores, and specialty shops. There is a Starbucks on every corner it seems, and they have pushed the smaller businesses out of business. We have several local building suppliers that have been run out of business by Lowe's and Home Depot. Also, office supply stores that have been around for about a hundred years, run out by Office Max, Staples, and Office Depot. It really makes my heart sad to see the rich get richer at the expense of others just trying to make an honest living. Great post.

The exact same thing happened to my husband and I, here in Sedona AZ. There was a really nice little cofee shop right across the street from us, that we absolutely loved, and now it's closed. They just closed one day for no reason. I really miss them.

Yes, but it had nothing to do with coffee. This pizzeria made the HEALTHIEST pizza, whole grain crust, low fat cheese, turkey pepperoni and some other good spices added to it, only 250 calories a slice... and it was actually very good!!! I felt that I could actually eat pizza for lunch and NOT feel guilty about it after but.. before I knew it, it went out of business! I guess most people prefer the greasy stuff!

Waterlily - Here is one of the plants I sell.
I completely understand how you feel, as its happening in my area also. I have a small business selling fish supplies and plants that is in trouble, as Petco opened right near me. They have already caused the other small business to close. I'm hoping to make it one more year, as its very hard to make money during these bad business times for the small business.

kind of.it wasn't coffee, but a few mom and pop diners were bought up and replaced by high-brow stores with unreasonable prices. there's no way i'm paying $11 for a breakfast plate of eggs.

Its always the smaller businesses that are pushed out. Its the same where I live, there is a dispute going on trying to keep the smaller post offices open that has been going on for years. But the newest dispute going on now is to save the smaller pharmacies. The smaller ones are being pushed out by the bigger chains. Its a never ending story for the small business owners. Its a big shame, especially when they have ben around for years before the bigwigs came to town.
