Death of a pet |
| |
| I know many people see their pets as only animals. I see my pets as family members. When my first dog died from bone cancer at 7 years old, I cried for 2 weeks. She was a doberman, who weighted in at about 125 pounds. She was a sweet as can be, when I had a problem pregnancy, she stayed by me every minute to comfort me. My next dog, also a doberman, but a male, was a bit (ok a lot) goofier. He died at about 7 1/2, his liver was gone. We think it was due to the rawhide chews that he loved so much. We did not realize that many of them are treated with arsenic which can have bad effects on the liver. Now, I must admit, when my dogs died, I was devastated for weeks. When my ex-husband moved out, I never really missed him. So, how do you feel about your pets, are they family members to you? Are you effected by the death of a pet? How? | | | | | |

| | I lost my doberman, Circe, back in November right after my youngest daughter was born. They're amazing dogs, and I was heartbroken even though we knew it was coming. She was diabetic, and the last year was very hard for her and us. While I wouldn't say it's as bad as losing a family member, it is horrible. | | | | | | |

| | How old was she? So far I have not had a problem with a diabetic dogs. Both of my dogs now have chronic skin problems, but they are 9 and almost 12. Yes, dobies are amazing dogs, my female was so protective of my son, when we went to sell our house, we had to put her outdoors, she did not even want strangers in his bedroom | | | |

| | She was diagnosed at about 8, and lived another 4 years with twice daily insulin shots & a prescription diet. When she was diagnosed we were told not to expect her to make it another year. Her quality of life wasn't what it had been, but I don't believe she was suffering either. | | | |

| | Our younger lab was adopted with the expectation he would not live to be a year old. He turned 9 in December. Boy he showed them! | | | |

| | I love my animals. They are like family. It would be very upsetting to me if a death happened. But it is good information about the rawhide chews. I did not know about that. Thanks. | | | | | | |

| | We unfortunately found out about the rawhide chews too late. Our dogs now get nylabones or long bones from cows, that we boil to make them tough. | | | |

| | I feel my fluffy is a part of my family. I have never had a pet die on me. I can't understand that feeling. My love for this crazy cat has shocked me so much. I never thought I could ever connect to a cat. I find that being my cat has this way of talking to us. Really he does you should be hear. We have this love relationship with him. When someone was at my door and trying to be very quiet. I felt something was wrong. My company thought I was crazy. My cats started with the sounds he makes. Then walks to me lifting his head back and forth. That meant come here. I went to the door he laid right there without moving. That like one is a part of my family. | | | | | | |

| | Yes, pets really do have a way of communicating. I think we learn to understand them and really do connect. with them. I think people really have a need for pets, they are so wonderful and loving and non-judgmental and they need us too. They love us, I think even more then we love them. | | | |

| | I think pets have a better chance of making it to heaven then the rest of us, they are truly loving animals and ask only to be fed and treated nicely. I am sure your cat is in heaven. I understand about the dreams, I had them too. | | | |

| | My dog was 11 years old when she became ill, I just watched her go slowly downhill. It came to my 29th birthday and I knew that I needed to have her put to sleep but I could not do it, not on my birthday, and I think she knew as she raleighed around a bit and so we were able to leave it to the next day. She could not walk and she was incontinent and we had to carry her to the car and then into the vets, and she knew, you know, she knew. The vet told me she was suffering with heart failure and that it was the kindest thing to do. He let me have time with her to make her comfortable and I was with her when they did it, her legs were so swollen that he could not get the needle in the vein at first, then when he did I watched the life leave her eyes and broke my heart. She was more than a dog, she was my best friend, she had been through so much with me and it was the worst thing I ever had to do. I will never have another dog, I cannot stand to go through that pain ever again, it has been 6 years now, and I still miss her so much. | | | | | | |

| | Okay, you brought tears to my eyes, having gone through the same thing I know exactly how you feel. But the love and joy that a dog can bring to your life is such a wonderful thing. I hate going through the pain, but the comic relief I have had for so many years due to my dogs is well worth it. | | | |

| | Oh no I am fine, what I meant is that I tend to put bad things away in a best forgotten file, and I do totally forget. It is a good thing for me to remember because then I am dealing with it rather than storing it all away. | | | |

| | Hello, Debs! Oh, yes, the death of a pet is certainly a sad thing. Specially when you aren't expecting it. My first dog died about two years ago. Everyone knew he was going to die, because he was really ill. He had 16 years! My mother cried a lot. It was a great impact for all of us. I didn't really cry, I was prepared for it, and I had another dog which is now our only one. However, I did miss arriving home and not seeing him there. It is strange, it is a blank space in your life. However, now I'm used to it. Respectfully, Munhozmib. | | | | | | |

| | Yes, you do get used to the emptiness..but you love the happiness of being greeted by a loving pooch or two. It is sad, I know how your Mom feels, he did live to a nice old age, but that is not really a comfort. It is such a loss. | | | |

| | Well Deb, my pets are like my children and, they are treated that way. I have lost many pets and it affects me tremendously. Do I cry? Lots and lots. I lost a dog to emergency room neglect and I cried for 4 weeks. Of course it was off and on, but it just seemed to never stop. I cremate ALL my animals...dogs, cats, guinea pigs, hamsters, birds...I know their soul is no longer with their body but, I keep their ashes close to me. I have told many people that when it is my time to leave, I want all my animals' ashes either buried with me or, mixed with my ashes (I am not sure yet if I want to be buried or cremated)...as I want them with me always. So, I am sure this little bit of information tells you just what my animals mean to me and just how I feel about them. (I guess I should clarify...the hamsters and guinea pigs belong to my kids...I cremate all their animals for them as well. My animals are all dogs although I do have one of my cats ashes from 14+ years ago and I just got a cat the other day) | | | | | | |

| | Yes, they are our children. Since my son joined the navy, my guys have gotten very spoiled. They sleep in bed with us...and we are talking almost 200 pounds total in the 2 dogs...the blankets are wrapped around us like tourniquets..but I would not have it any other way. Yes, I have pet ashes with their collar and favorite toys. | | | |

| | My dogs don't know what it is like or what it means to sleep on a floor. When it is bed time, off to a bedroom and up on a bed they go. If they can't jump onto the bed, they sit there and whine and whine until someone picks them up and puts them on it. That is a picture of one of my Yorkies. He loves hiding under blankets and I snapped that picture one day as he was coming out from under one. | | | |

| | Its very hard losing a pet as they have become part of the family. It's sad that they have such short life spans and it is like they become like a child. I am so sorry to hear about your loss and allow yourself to go through the grieving stages at your own pace. Thoughts are with you. | | | | | | |

| | Yes, they are part of the family and thinking of losing them does bring tears to my eyes, but they are so wonderful and fun, it is hard to be without a pet. They are worth every single tear. | | | |

| | I have very old dogs, one is nearly 16 the other almost 15. I try to convince myself on a daily basis that as long as they die safe and comfortable either in their own beds or in my arms at the vet I will be ok. The reality is I will be broken hearted and cry for weeks. I love your comment about the ex though,I can so identify. | | | | | | |

| | They are old, and even though you know that, you are denying it...but that is only human. Yes, you will cry but when you think of all the love and laughter they have given you, you know they are worth every tear. I had a sign in my kitchen for a long time 'I got a dog for my husband, it was a fair trade' ---actually I think I got the better end of the deal. But please note..I am talking about the ex here! | | | |
