We had our cake made for us by a relative, it was not a modern one, it was beautiful. Me and my hubby do not like fruit cake and so a compromise was made, our relative did a sponge cake and a fruit cake so that everyone had a choice. I was so stressed out and nervous though that I never even had a bite of it, and there was only fruit cake left the next day!! I think there are some absolutely gorgeous wedding cakes about though, its worth getting married for just to have the cake he he.

Hi Rose...oh there are some brilliant cakes nowadays...when we were looking at them in magazines...we came across a company that made chocolate creations.they were incredible..three tiers of sponge and fruit..all smothered in chocolate, then pure chocolate roses applied all over!!!wonderful..the only thing that we worried about was if the weather was hot...would the chocolate melt??..but surely this must have been tried and tested as they were a big company!!!.Hence to say the prices of their cakes were high too...but im sure they were delicious.

There are some beautiful, beautiful cakes available now. My friend has a book full of designs & I spend hours poring over it wondering which one I should ask her to make me in the event that I need a fancy cake. Why save them for weddings? Any occassion is a good excuse for cake in my opinion!
I do think the ones which are make up of loads of tiny cakes are a good idea. So easy to split up, no faffing around with little pieces and a bit knife. They're easy to pop into boxes if you need to send them to guests who couldn't make it, no portion control issues and you can have all sorts of different flavours if you like.
I'm racking my brains trying to think of a suitable occassion for a flashy cake now! It's my partner's birthday today, but I think I'm probably a bit late to whip one up now! Maybe next year ....

LOL Moo....but agreed there are some wonderful cakes about. We had all the wedding magazines when our daughter got married,,or i will put that another way ,our daughter bought all of the wedding magazines,!!!...when we saw the cakes that they were turning out nowadays we couldnt believe it!!!!
Another post on this subject has said they went to a wedding with a profiterole tower, and their wedding cake was a truffle tree!!!!!...
I think the sharing out part of it is made much simpler when the cake is constructed in that way...there arent many people who dont love pudding!!!

Your daughter had a great idea! I was not that creative when we got married, but the cake was good we had fresh flowers put on it. I think it's great how creative wedding cakes (and cakes in general) have gotten in the past few years. There is some show - probably on the food network - that shows cakes being made, it's quite amazing and those guys are so creative.

I think they are good...lets face it ..you cut a tier of a fruit wedding cake..then you cut it into tiny ittle bits...then everyone helps themselves..some of it gets eaten..some of it gets dropped...some of it is trod underfoot...whereas if you have this fairy cake type cake...everyone who wants one can help them selves!!!...but they are awfully expensive ..considering what they are!!
