happyDo any of you do any needlework?
Ive been a keen needlewoman for many years...making allsorts and everything...from dresses to cushion covers...to dolls house bits n pieces.
I taught one of my daughters the basics of sewing, but the other one wasnt really keen at all!!
Im wondering if this really has become a thing of the past now...whereas many years ago every thing was repaired to make it last longer...now we just replace it!!!
Every thing that i was able to make ..I made...but lol the kids hated it!!!...because i used to make their soap bags, their gym bags...and mend everything!!!!
I think they thought it was just being dead tight!!!
Do any of you sew....???

I do needlework, but not as in sewing, I do a lot of cross stitching. Well I do when I get the chance although these days that is not very often, as for ordinary sewing, well I would rather not!! I did used to like embroidery as a child though and that was okay, but I do get bored of that rather quickly.

The cost of buying the materials to make your own clothes and such has risen and the cost of cheaply made clothes has dropped so it's now often not worthwhile to make your own items unless you're looking for something really special.

I repair my own clothes, although I'm not terribly good at it. I darn socks, sew on buttons, sew up small rips & patch jeans & my son's trousers. My sewing isn't really good enough to make my own items yet, though I've just bought a sweing machine so when I learn to use it I'd like to make some curtains.

I do agree that needlework of any sort is becoming a bit of a lost art. There's really not many people who can be bothered any more, and those that do do so as a hobby rather than by necessity.

Your comments are so true Moo...the cost of buying clothes now has plummeted...take Asda for example...omg..they are marvellous for kids clothes..i go there to shop for my grandchildrens bithdays and christmas presents...for a relativelyt smal amount of money you can get what seems to bbe an awful lot of presents!!...Plus the fact they are fashionable and especially my grandaughter..she loves them!!!
I embroider..and do wool work..but just for fun...for my own satisfaction....as you say its very much a dying art now...but i was taught by my mother...and she by her mother...that was the way!!
I think if you can along well enough to do running repairs thats great....

If you're clever enough to do embroidery and other embellishments you can add beautiful touches to cheap shop bought clothes. Plain jeans particularly can be made to look really cool with some clever embroidery. Maybe some flowers around the bum or on the pockets? I have a friend who has covered the top half of hers with toning buttons. They look amazing, but I'm not sure they'd be that comfortable to sit down in for long!

Definitely not for me. I learned how to sew and stitch at a young age and I think it's very important that we do know these things. I am not rich enough to just throw away torn or holed clothes. I mend them and make them look like still normal.
By the way, aside from posting and clicking for pennies I also cross stitch to pass the time. I want to collect and make my own cross stitch studio someday.
Here's a picture of my recent finished product.

well I sew frequently..if only for pleasure now....the cross stitch picture is lovely..cross stitich is quite intense to follow, but its rewarding!
A nice idea to start a studio...making up your own designs?
there is a company on the web that is called something like one off designs cross stitch...im taking it that each one they make is a unique design...which i thought wa s a lovley idea .
Thankyou for sharing your work!

Yea, I know cross stitch is a very time consuming task but when you can't do anything it's good to pass the time. It's not that I'm invalid or what, it's just that I am not yet allowed to work in the UK until I get a proper visa. So, cross stitching is my way of getting busy.

I went to check One off websites and I see that they sell mostly apparels. But it's a good thing to have your own design and market it.

I'm not yet an expert in in making cross stitch patterns but I hope to master it eventually. I want to make people's faces' pattern for individuals who want to cross stitch their pictures. I saw one and I was fascinated. Also I can cross stitch for people who don't have time to do it. That way I can keep myself inside the house and I don't have bosses to deal with, only costumers. thumbup
