HP Printers and Refille ink cartridges - question .

I have HP printer Deskjet 940c. I just took the "leap" and did my first refill of an ink cartridge. I don't use it to much so buying new was not to much a problem, but it is time to do more saving and eco friendly and all, so I gave it a shot. I refilled the color anda the black and installed them, did the page align thing and all, but on the "Tool Box" option where is shows Ink Estimation (for full or how empty) it still shows how it was when I took the carts out - 40% full on color and 0% full on black. I was expecting to see 100% of both. I called the store that did the refills and they say my printer could be set up to not recognize the status of refilled carts. Anyone ever hear of this before? IT is such a major option and with so many doing refills, how does everyone know they are getting low? Is there a way to change a setting on the printer to accomodate refills? I emailed HP about it, who knows if or when I'll get a response so I come to the pros....MyLot pros! Any suggestions?

Yes, it does print in black and yeah, i am going that route too. I figure a refill every other time won't hurt. I don't want to have to buy a new printer, but at the same time, not waste money! I'll see how it goes. I don't suppose it can be to bad a thing to do!

HP for obvious reasons would prefer that people buy new ink cartridges. I used to refill mine before two things happened: 1) printers got "smart" (or should we say greedy!) enough to know the difference, and 2) a cartridge that I refilled too many times brok one of my printers. Now I only use HP ink on HP printers although I use anybody's paper. I hate that HP makes us waste so much ink on alignment, but I've used quite a few different printers professionally and at home and I have to admit that HPs have been the most reliable, when I don't cut corners, that is.

Yeah, I expected them to recommend their own. But then think, refilling is such a boom - if it was so damaging, why is it so popular? I have always used HP, I go through maybe 2 color and 3 black a year, not a huge expense, but alwaysing looking to save where I can. I did it while the warrenty was valid so if something did happen, they couldn't blame refilled carts and they would fix it. However, the warrenty expired about 2 years ago and I have still kept buying hte HP new ones. The printer is at least 3 years old, so I thought maybe it was made prior to the "smarty" ones of today! I don't want it to break but at the same time I thought maybe every other time do refill. And refill each cart only once then turn it into Office Max for $3 each and use that toward new ones. Icalled the place that did the refil and he said that the printers usually just don't recognize a refill as far as noting the ink levels. It is full but just not recognized. Well, I guess I'll just see how it goes this time and buy new next time. And yes, I to have had great "luck" with HP. PC's and printer and scanner. I'll stick with them. Thanks for your comment
