money contest on TV... good deal or no deal? email this discussion to a friend?

I don't really like watching TV shows like Deal or No Deal, the price is right, jeopardy, duel, or anything that has something to do with contest. But my husband loves these shows so I don't have a choice. (I do get lucky sometimes though when I have the remote).

I have nothing against it. Maybe I am just jealous and wished that I was the one winning millions of dollars in there. And I wonder too, do they really get the prize that they won.

Do you think those shows are for real? And if you really win million of dollars... do they have to pay the tax for it too? or a car, do they pay the insurance too?

Yes, taxes are paid on any winnings. So, they really don't get 1 million...but even 80% of that (after taxes) is a nice chunk of change! I think they're for real..never really thought about it they are or aren't I guess. I don't watch them too often...but they're good for an hour of entertainment.

I agree, it's fun to watch though I'm not really a big fan. Thanks for the response.

I've known people who have been on these shows and they are extremely difficult to get on. And, it's even more difficult to win. But, yes, they do pay a lot of taxes on all the prizes, including registrations on cars and prize taxes. Also, you have to qualify to actually win a prize. Sometimes, like on the Price is Right, they qualify you afterwards and you have to meet certain income requirements from what I've heard.

And, the prizes don't come all at once and can take years before you get all of them. This one guy said it took a year or so to get a livingroom set that he won on the Price is Right and he was still waiting for other things more than several months after that.

I understand. When I am watching it, I keep on thinking how I could get in there because I feel so excited too when someone wins and a bit jealous I guess. But it's only now that I learned that they don't really get the price right away. So you still have to play the waiting game. That's interesting. thanks for the response.

I do enjoy watching the shows that challenge my knowledge. I really don't care for "Deal or no Deal or that type of show. They have to be real and they are watched very carefully. Years ago there was a show called the 64 Thousand Dollar Question. They got in trouble for giving some one the answer to the 64 thousand dollar question. I don't remember all the details Just that there was a big stink about it. Those that win do have to pay taxes on it. Insurance I don't about.

Well, I guess no one is really excepted from taxes. That's how it really works. Thanks for the response.

I love watching them. The Price is Right is my favorite. The contestants have to pay taxes, and I am sure they have to pay insurance, too.

I must confess I have watched Deal or No Deal a few times and have been touched by some of the stories of the contestants. I have to wonder, though, just how genuine some of these people really are, and how genuine the prizes are too. With all the publicity lately about rigged phone-in contests and the fixing been done by television companies, I feel that these contests are all rigged now.

I agree with you. I also think that some of these scene are also scripted. Well, I was just guessing because some are too good to be true.
