Chocolate was originally used as a savoury food in Mexico. The only slightly different version I've tried was a bar of chocolate with lime zest and black pepper. Didn't like it much, but then I don't like lime with chocolate anyway. Don't know why I bought that flavour. The black pepper aftertaste was interesting

Like the person who responded before, I think it's only been in the last few hundred years that chocolate was considered a sweet. Before that, it was used more like coffee or with spicier foods. It is inherently bitter, so if your friend is putting in the unsweetened kind, that might taste good. I would like to try that. I think there are a lot of candy in Latin America that has chocolate together with spicy items in it.
