I think they are what used to be called 'shell suits' in the UK. I have no idea why, unless it was something you could throw on quickly if you suddenly found yourself in the middle of shellfire!

They were ugly, a fire hazard and tended to be worn by a certain class of people roughly equivalent to what you call 'rednecks'!

Now, bell-bottoms are quite a different matter! They are from the era when I had long hair to wear and was 'in my prime' (as they say)!

Yes...definitely better left buried in the past. I would go into hysterics every time my brother wore his.

If they are the same thing as shellsuits, I honestly hope they are dead and buried for good. There is it's descendant, the tracksuit, which had a while when people thought it was "sad" but now that's doing well! I think I had a shellsuit when I was younger. I think it was a pink and blue one, goodness knows why, I've never liked pink. And Owlwings is so right, they were a serious firehazard!
Bell bottoms are different of course, I actually like them! There are a lot of fashions which I would love to see return but the shellsuit is certainly not one of them!

Yes, luckily for me my parents new better than to stick me in one of those things, I did have friends that wore them to school dances and other events like that.
