Okay bit of a rant here. As many know I'm doing a major spring cleaning thing to begin with..but as if that weren't enough...now I have MORE to do
I'm taking a break from it to be here...then back to my fun filled day
I had to get my buns out of bed much earlier than I'm used to as my super was to come up and replace the entire kitchen sink faucet system...He just left a little while ago, and left me with a major cleanup to do now.
First..yes, he had to shut the entire water system down so no water would be leaking...okay that's understandable...but then when he started un-attaching the old faucet system it was still like Niagara Falls with water spurting out all over the place making it look like I needed to built an ark fast from the flooding it created...he finally managed to stop the water from gushing out, but yikes. It did take him forever to replace the faucet system as he's just not too keen of a repair person to begin with...I could have probably done a better job of it myself, and would have but I didn't want to risk anything going wrong and then my being blamed for it..this way he gets the blame..hehe
But here's the deal and a general ranting question....why do men in general, when they do repairs make such a friggin mess of things and then expect us gals to clean up? Like gee, I'm Sooooo thrilled now to have this additional major cleaning up to do...NOT..I really could do without this
Okay...shall leave here for awhile to do MORE cleaning!

Who wrote those rules, pye??? I'm not a New Yorker, but seems to me if the super or some maintenance guy makes a mess, he's responsible for cleaning it up.
My handyman wouldn't get out of my place without cleaning up the mess he makes. So far I've been lucky that he always has.
There oughta be a law if there isn't one already. A tenant's rights to a safe, habitable environment at no cost for damages incurred by another.

He's been our super for a really long time, and nope he's NEVER cleaned up after any of the messes he makes--he's always left it up to us peasant tenants...LOL. Also, he's just plain lazy to boot

Poor pyewacket my friend, I have never lived in an appartment building for very long that I would need any type of repairs. One time I did rent a home that needed a new kitchen garbage disposal and the lanlord took the old one out and it took him a week to get a new one in. I could only use one side of my sink for the week.
In general when I pay a repain man to come into my home to fix something. They come in and they clean up their mess. My plummer even takes his shoes off when he comes in to my home. I don't even do that. My feet get to cold.
I guess the simple difference is I pay the repairman to come into my home and he is a private contractor. Your super gets paid not matter what a crappey job he does or not.
I am lucky when my husband does any repairs on the house, which is rare since his stroke he always cleans up after himself.
Sorry you you have to be the mop up lady today.
Don't get to wet my friend.

Yup--that's probably it...since he's the super he gets paid by his landlord whether he does anything or not...mainly not...and gee, he lives rent free too--if he had to pay for that apt he's in he'd be paying about $1,000 a month at least

Are you sure your super isn't related to my brothers?
They are really good for doing this to me. When or if I can get them to assist me with something like that they always leave a huge mess behind for me to clean up. To give you an idea last year I ended up in the hospital due to bronchitis caused by my allergies. Now one of the triggers were two trees in our back yard. My brother came over and sawed them down, leaving all the branches out there and the trunk. My other brother who lives with us never got them either. They stayed there for a month before I finally put them in a barrel for the garbage men to take. Now because they were all dried out they were actually harder to put in the barrel then if they had been done when first cut. I was not happy at all and it really ticked me off as well.

Geez...you mean your brothers couldn't have picked up that mess..and yes, that would've have been harder to store all that in the barrels since they were so dried out---sheesh, some men!

I just spent the last two days and nights at my parent's house because the maintenance man, when asked to fix a leak in my bathroom, contributed to a mess instead. First of all, the night I looked up and saw the light fixture above my toilet filled with water (bulb still shining brightly). he didn't answer his emergency pager. I was so upset with the leak (it was also leaking on the ceiling where if you sat on the toilet you'd get a small shower) I left and went to my parents. The next day I call and tell the apartment manager. Day after that I call to ask if it was fixed, and she says the maintenance man checked, and there was no problem. I said, "Did he look UP?" She asked him and I heard in the background him say 'no.' Long story short I come home today to find it sort of fixed, but a big mess left behind because of his carelessness. I could hit him upside the head. I'd like to blame it on him being young, but he's my age! We should know better!

That was the point no one but me seemed to get. Water + electricity = disaster! I had to go detail by detail to get the manager to see why I had to use the emergency pager number in the first place!
As for sort of fixed, he took the fixture off, but the light is still there, still burning, but no fixture. They said that even after it dried out it should probably be left off. My question is, did ya fix what caused the leak in the first place. They said they didn't know what had caused it, thus I don't know if it will happen again, or how it happened. I mean, is it a waiting game? Am I going to sit on the toilet at 2am in the morning and get a shower? I live on the bottom floor, how could I be the only one having this problem they seem to think the aparment complex's roof caused? The roof is at the top, me at the bottom....

Too bad you can't get a REAL professional electrician to check out the fixture...that would make me real nervous...One time years ago, there was an actual electrical outlet fire in my bedroom...I mentioned this in another discussion of mine long time ago..and yes we're talking a REAL fire, flames the works...Little ole me managed to put the fire out with quick thinking with flour! Didn't think throwing water at an outlet was a great idea...LOL--Anyway...the super replaced the outlet fixture...but I still don't trust it...really should get a pro electrician myself to really look at it...I do have my bedroom light lit in that socket, but pull it out before I go to bed...Why? You see the strange thing was, was that the fire had started with nothing on...the light nor fan were on at the time...it started without them being on--
If I were you, I'd make a bit of a nuisance of myself and have someone look at that fixture of yours really, really good
As for claiming water coming from the roof while your in the basement....that isn't unusual....One time the two old biddies that used to live over us had their tub overflow....it DIDN'T affect us, but the water came like Niagara falls not even to the the apartment below us, but the entrance vestibule under THEM...figure that one out

Yikes that was dangerous! That water in the light fixture could have shorted out and started a fire!
What do you mean it was sort of fixed? Didn't he do a good job of it at all?

This person should never have made such a mess and expected you to clean it up. When workmen come into your home they are supposed to leave it in the same condition they found it. This sort of thing would bring tons of complaints on contractors around here. If you let him get away with this one you will have to tolerate the mess maker forever

the man next door to me was the handyman for our building before it was bought over. He is 72 years old and he cleans up all his mess including sweeping and mopping up the floor. He is quite remarkable actually.

Any service person has an obligation to leave after a job, and clean up as best s/he can! It's totally unacceptable that your super left you with such a mess, but to complain would put your relationship with the super in peril. Because you don't want to jeopardize that relationship, I'm afraid you are going to have to suck it up, and clean it up. C'est la vie!!

Your landlord should have called a plumber. There are some jobs best left to the professionals and no, you should not have to do it yourself. Look my husband does home repairs and a little plumbing, and there is quite a lot of tools he needs, soldering iron, the soldering paste and it has to be lead free, plus different sized wrenches, pipe wrenches, etc. Men make messes because they are too busy fixing things up to pick up. If they did, nothing would get done.

The landlord does have a plumber..some relative of his..and he's the worse shat going...seriously, no one, but no one in the building likes him...heck I'll take the super to do repairs anytime over him, even if he does create or leaves a mess

Actually pye, we've replaced 7 kitchen faucets in the last 14 years and never had a problem till we replaced the one recently in the present and hopefully final kitchen. OMG..We just couldn't get to the old faucet to remove it. My hubby finally gave up and took the kitchen sink out to remove the dam faucet. Replacing with the new one was a piece of cake thou. I pray I never have to replace a nitemare of a faucet ever again. Hubby is also 'clean' when he works. Least he tries to be but will clean the majority of the mess up himself when he's done. Glad we no longer have landlords cause the couple we did have were major pain in the azzes.

Actually to be honest I could use a whole new sink period! It's over thirty years old, but to get any kind of replacement would jack up the rent more per month..great, don't need that. The very, very first super that was here was great..he was so opposite of this one a real neat freak..kept the grounds/sidewalks so clean you could eat off of them...mopped the hallway floors once a week..this guy..sheesh..he's just plain LAZY

wow.that's a weird job to have with that.
a friend of mine is having practically the whole apartment redone-with them in there-and he says there's white plaster dust everywhere.
his girlfriend's not happy repeatedly cleaning up the mess these guys make(i don't blame her).

Hi pyewacket! Oh gee, you are absolutely right! When my hubby do some repairs, I usually do some cleaning up although he always put back the ladder or anything that is heavy back in its place after he uses them. Anyway, I do clean up after he does some repairs which I can't understand either, it seems to me not he always want to share the work with me all the time. haha...That is why, when there are instances that he do everything, repair and cleaning up, I praise the high heavens from above for such wonderful miracle! haha..Just my thoughts dear! Take care and have a nice day! :)

Ugh Spring Cleaning I have to do the same, I still have tons of boxes I have to go through of stuff that frankly I should just not even bother with and just toss out to donation or just literally dump! It is crazy how much stuff we have seriously.
I try to recycle as much as I can, if I have really cute and nice fabric stuff that I can cut out and make into something else than I try to do that but man, even that is starting to just become a big cumulative mess for me. I just do not have the room NOR the time.
I am trying so hard to start getting stuff to sell and the like, it is just crazy and I know that I need to do it so I should just do it!
Okay well here i go I am going to do it that is it, that is ALL!!!!

I m sorry this happened to you, pye. It does seem that the minute you start making headway then things go haywire doesn't it? I have been doing spring cleaning myself...or i should say trying to. I plan on moving soon to a smaller place and so have been trying to go thru stuff as well as major cleaning as i want my deposit back. Seems that as soon as I start this project, it is one thing after another. The other nite, my daughter tripped and fell and put a hole in the wall. Then my bathroom sink got clogged...i fixed it myself...no man or I would have maybe needed to borrow your ark. Well, good that you are taking a break...that's the best thing to do. Hope it gets better for you!

ya. She is fine. we ended up giggling about it. luckily, I have worked in carpentry and I have a clue how to fix these things. The walls are ridiculously thin here. I really don't know how she managed to do it but it was her elbow that went thru the wall.
