Okay so we all know things have changed over the years. But when was the last time your child or grand child told you someting "about the past" and you were surprised they even knew what they were talking about? My 8 YO GD has just learned in music class "Let's Go Fly A Kite" from the movie Mary Poppins. Mary Poppins was my all time favorite movie - I loved the book, and had a record - an LP record - of the story and it included all the songs. Today, I was telling her that when I was her same age, my favorite story/movie was Mary Poppins (although never actually saw the movie until I was pregnant with my second child in 1982) I had a day that I precisely remember - a Saturday when I had a paint by number picture and for some reason was alone in my house, and I put my Mary Poppins LP record on and painted literally for hours! Record players had that feature where once it ended, it would automatically retrieve the needle and pull it back to the beginning and start playing over again. FOr house this went on!(not to mention all the other times I played it!) But I to thie day - decades later, I still remember the words to most of the songs and when she started singing it, I started singing along and she was stunned that I not only knew it but knew more versese than she did! I told her my story and she says "you had your own record player?" I explained it to her and she said something about the actual record player and I asked her "Do you know what a record player is?" she says "Yes. It is a machine that plays these HUGE CD's only the CD's are plastic and not metal and it has this arm thing that goes across it to hold the CD's on the spinner so the CD can play". So after I picked up my mouth off the floor where it fell...I was totally amazed that not only did she know what it was - generally speaking - but she used a comparison to todays advanced technologies and figured they were the same thing - only goes to show the item has changed, the theory has not! I wonder how many kids these days would love to work and play with a record player like we did back in the olden days?!! Remember how we used to stack them up on the center pole so when one was done, a new record would just drop down a start playing! And a stack of 45's - boy, wasn't that the life! Kids, they say the darndest things but boy the memeories they bring back - what's your memory of that fantastic invention - The Record Player?

The record player reminds me of my parents and their records. I used to play with the zipper on their Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers album...I was around a lot of music growing up and most of it I still love today!

Thank goodness we have the stuff from "back then"! The garbage they call music today is pathetic! I'd hate it if that is all I had to listen to! Bunch of nervous and jerky music to words i can't even understand what they are saying! ... at least I assume it is words they are saying!

It's not words it's gibberish!! I can't stand the music of today (most of it there are a few good songs out there) for the same reasons.

LOL that is so true:) I loved Mary Poppins too :) It was a delightful movie that I remember watching at the movie theater and then later. When I had my kids I bought the video and they still have it. Actually sometimes they watch it which is amazing - although come to think about it it has been a few years LOL As for record players, yes I do remember. I had a portable one that I could take to my friend's house and we would listen to our favorites over and over. Or until one of our moms could bear it no more LOL
