Woman or Lady? |
|
What do you call an adult person of the female gender? Today I was just wondering... I remember that I was always told "woman" was impolite, however, I wonder if this differs around the wordl? So, what do you think? Do you say "that lady across the road" or "the woman across the road"? And why? Is it impolite for you to say "woman"?

1. paid2write (3605) | 6 months ago | I think it is considered a bit old fashioned to call someone a 'lady' now because it goes back to the times when a 'lady' was supposed to be superior to a 'woman'. We don't often refer to 'gentlemen' either. We are all men and women now, regardless of how rich or poor we are.

3. icequeen123 (309) | 6 months ago | I think I would call an older woman (as in grandmother age) a lady. In my mind, for some reason, I think of my mother as being a woman. I think it also depends on the person. When I think "lady" I don't necessarily think rich, but I do think of someone with class and style. When I think "woman", I think of inner strength and determination. I guess we can all be both.

4. megumiart (2920) | 6 months ago | I've never thought about this before. I've always said "lady" just because I liked the sound of it better than "woman."

citrusemma (385) | 6 months ago | Hehe, I agree! I might say "woman" as in "she is a very strong woman" but I won't say "that woman" but rather "that lady" as it sounds nicer too, hehe=]

6. highflyingxangel (6258) | 6 months ago | I use the terms interchangably. I don't see a problem with either of the words. I think it just depends on how you use them and the other words you use with them. If you are using insulting words, either of the terms could be insulting.
