Finding a job, why can't I find a job? email this discussion to a friend?

I had a job, went on maternity leave and decided not to return to said job for travel distance and pay reasons. I loved this job but for the drive versus what they payed it wasn't worth it. Anyhow I have been looking since beginning of February I've had a few interviews obviously nothing has paned out.

Hubby says he can't figure out why I'm so unemployable and neither can I. Apparently I think I am worth more than I am but for what most people will pay I just can't justify it. I don't want to go back to work if I don't really enjoy what I am doing especially if I am not getting paid well.

I know I sound selfish and if you haven't picked up on it I don't actually have to have a job but it would be very very good for me to have one. We can make bills and eat and what not with me not working but there really isn't any extra and there is always the possibility that hubby could get layed off any day (he's a construction worker).

I know there are others out there that have had the same problem or similar anyhow. It would be nice to here other stories or ideas for interview success as interviews are not my strong suit although I have improved hugely in the last few years.

When i wasnt working for a while just after i graduated from college (couldnt get a job) I had one interviewer tell me that they were more likely to hire someone who HAD a job already because it showed they were willing to work. He said it didnt matter why you didnt have a job they wanted someone who was willing to work.

I made the comment that i thought that was silly as theres many people who have a good reason to be out of work....school...maternity...move to new area. And that People who were willing to just drop another job right away to start at a new one might have some dependability issues (they wanted someone to start within 2-3 days of being offered the job).
I didnt get the job.

But I found ironically I got a job at Macdonald's worked there for a month and had 4 job offers from other places i interviewed (some i had interviewed with prior to having a job for similar position and hadnt been offered a position).

I have to agree that this makes sense and seems silly to me all at the same time. I understand that they want somebody who is willing to work but it seems irresponsible to me to take a job that you don't want just to have it and then drop it two weeks later when you get the job you really want. I also would think that it would look bad on your resume. Like you said people are out of work for reasons other than they just quit. Hmmm makes you wonder doesn't what people are really looking for/at when they are looking to hire.

Yeah it really does make one wonder.

the other thing i found made the interviews/job offers come faster was having volunteer work listed. or listing myself as self employed (it wasnt a lie it was only part time type work though)
