Another One Bites The Dust...

Well, I have a friend who has broken everyone's chairs,and people are afraid to invite him to their house. I still invite him to my house since he is a wonderful person,but I have to tell you that I'm cautious because I love my furniture. He is more careful now than before,and I know that he must feel terrible about breaking the furniture.

hi twoey it happened to me when I was in England as a student about 14 years old. In the family where I stayed they had these fabric blinds at the windows and one of them came down I wanted to put it in the right place and used an older chair for that, it cracked and broke.
And i was not that overweight back then.......... like I am now.

Really bad luck, but that was the only time something like this happened to me.

Our furniture is quite stable, as both of us, my husband and me, are overweight. So I guess nothing like that can happen at our place.

I dont really take any special precautions
I have heavy freinds and my mom is heavy
and since my children are little Dr. Destructos I tend to buy pretty sturdy furniture anyway
But in the event that one of those embarrassing moments happen I wont make a big deal of it
I will try to find a way tolesson the embarrassment by claiming the furniture was somehow faulty or already damaged and should never have been set in in the first place by anyone

I am afraid I am in the same boat. Oh,No that is not a thing I can get into anymore. I even tried getting on a small tourist boat and everybody went to the other side to keep it from tipping. It isn't that I haven't tried to lose weight. I just gain everything I lost and added a few more lbs with it. I have broken my desk chair before the material was even soiled. Was sitting at the table when the legs spread and left me sitting on the floor. I have broken car seats twice. I don't sit on our coach as it is a reclineing one and I know I will break it if I sit on it. I use the solid wood high back chair my mother bought years ago. The springs are not solid but it holds me up anyway. My family goes way back with the heavy weight problem. One daughter is thin while the other hikes, eats little and while she is thin she says she is hungry all the time. I guess she drinks more water to feel full.

LOL.... I don't know that furniture is made better these days! My sturdiest piece of furniture is a table and chairs set from the 50's. Metal and sturdy as can be. The wood products these days are worthless. Even the best name in living room furniture has some issues. I purchased a top of the line lazy boy couch for substantial amounts. Steel frame and supposed guarantee for life it was trashed this past year because it was broken (yes the steel part) and I had just had it with having it repaired.

I did have my sewing chair break one day.
It could have happened with a little kid sitting on it though.
It was a swivel chair and apparently the pole had a crack in it.
Well it decided to break on me.
When I fell onto the floor I could not move.
I had caught the cord of the machine and pulled it to the very edge of the table, so if I had of moved without help, the machine would have landed on my legs.

We also had a neighbour who was very very large, everytime he sat on my chairs I had my fingers crossed the chair did not break.

It's happened at work when I was a nurse. It happened twice really... well the nursing home needed new office chairs anyway. The first one broke and I fell, and about 6 months later another chair broke.. and of course the people I worked with laughed and made remarks about me being heavy and breaking the chairs... but these chairs were bound to break.

My son in law is 240 pounds and he broke one of my office chairs here.. but he was leaning back in it and the back broke right off the frame.. I have another one now and no one uses it but me.. and he has his own office chair now.

I've never had anyone break my furniture like that, but we had a home made picnic table once that was a little off balance, that if a person was a little larger than average, and went to sit down on one side, the table might tip over. One party we had, there were two guys sitting on one side, and the wife of one of the guys was on the other side. One guy stood up, and the table tipped over, lifting one guy in the air, and dumping our friend on her butt. We tried so hard not to laugh, but it was just too funny. Our friend was kind of overweight, but I wouldn't say she was that bad.

I really hate to disagree with you but i feel furniture was made better a long time ago rather than now..These days you have to pay a big price for "real wood" everything is a vaneer or wood colored...I don't know about recliners but the old stuff is still around...I have never had a chaor break on me when i sat down but i have to agree that would be very embarrassing....

my poor aunt..sat in a chair that was about 85 years old in my house-and it broke.she fell to the floor.
she was understandibly horrified.
we tried telling her the chair was no big deal,was she alright,but she was more concerned about it for some reason.

my dad got all new chairs after that-i think the chair was just too old.
