Or do you have so much stuff already that You'll need to move house soon? In our consumer based society,Buy,Buy,Buy is the theme. Can anyone say that they honestly have enough stuff? Do you have drawers or cupboards with several perfectly servicable cellphones that you've left behind for a better specified one? Are toasters from your wedding piled up like in a warehouse in your attic? Do we really NEED to be getting something physical for each Anniversary,Birthday,Christmas? What alternatives would you consider,or do You Want gifts? Thanks for responses!

Honestly, I do have more than enough 'stuff' laying around the house and since we moved into a much smaller home 1 year ago, I have been downsizing like crazy. Getting rid of so much stuff and there is likely a whole lot more I COULD possibly get rid of. Maybe I will have a yard sale this spring AND all of our old computers, radios, cellphones and gagets have gone to a second hand agency here where we live who 'refurbishes' them and resells....However, that said...I still LOVE to receive presents. My birthday is this coming Sunday and am really hoping for a 'few surprises' from family etc. Nope, don't need anything material, but always nice. Hubby is taking me to our local casino for a show and dinner and gambling of course. Couldn't imagine Christmas without gifts, however we really do need to cut down...one thoughtful, useful gift per person would really beat the multitude of 'nice to have crap', sometimes! Thanks for asking. Thoughtful emails and phone calls and cards would also be a pleasant alternative to gift giving...

I like this question because its pertinent to today's society. We are encouraged to buy, buy, buy. And some of us do, do, do. Me? I went to the simplistic life style years ago. I move around, so that helps me keep my possessions in check. But, honestly, I'm tired of it. One year, I started a collection of mouse figurines. I bought some of them and when any occassion came around, guess what my gift was? Another mouse from the collection. One day I looked at them all arranged on the shelf and thought, 'This looks exactly like the display in the store!' I felt kind of silly and I developed a new shopping technique. If I see something in the store I think I want, I look it over. Then, I walk away and return to look once again. After a few times, I walk out the door and go home. Everytime I go to that store, I look at the item again. Eventually, I get bored with it and I'm thrilled I never bought it! My family knows the simple life I lead and they don't send me gifts. Most people don't know what anyone else wants anyway! My younger daughter sent me a whole assortment of hair clips for a combination mother's day gift and birthday gift. She knew me well enough to buy just the right item without spending a fortune. Christmas is for kids. I give people things I bake, or I make their favouite dessert when I'm invited to their house. Or, you can draw names out of a hat and buy one person one gift for Christmas. Take the time to watch each person open their gift and thank the person who bought it. It's so sad when families rush to open all the gifts at one time with no more than a quick thanks. I think I answered all the questions! If I didn't_ I have to stop anyway or I'll be here forever. You grabbed my attention with your comment about consuming and I ran off with it. The secret to having enough is to tell yourself you have enough and you always will! I love my simple life. Good question.

Thanks for the thought out response! I too would like to cut down on the clutter and simplify things for myself-At Christmas last year, there was a discounted offer on Satellite TV installation-I got all my family to contribute to that,so that was one of my most clutter free holidays ever!

There you go! You're on your way to a clutter free life. Is everyone enjoying the satellite television? Thanks for commenting back!

I like to give more than I like to recieve unless it is a gift card or something. I hate getting gifts because I always get things that end up needing to be returned, but I keep around anyways to spare others feelings. I do like gift cards because that way I can get what I want.

Thanks for the response! Yep,it can be awkward trying not to hurt someone's feelings when a gift doesn't fit...A Neighbour one Christmas brought in a giftwrapped box of chocolates to my Grandparents..they had one ready wrapped for him too,but he seemed reluctant to take it..it was only after He'd left and we opened it we realised why-We'd gifted him another of the exact same box he'd brought in!
