Do you? Do you speak French?
Or at least French Toast?
I made two loaves of bread yesterday, one wheat, one white. I just cut up some of the white bread and going to make French Toast this morning. I've heard it was good but I've never tried it myself, except for what I've been served at a restaurant.
Before now I've only used regular store-bought bread, and white works best. I don't make French Toast often because it doesn't work as well with wheat bread, and I rarely buy white bread anymore.
Do you like French Toast? How do you make yours? Have you made it with homemade bread?
Why do we call it French Toast anyway?

Ldyjarhead I have always wondered why they
called it french toast? I make mine with wheat
and its not too bad but sourdough is best I
think havent done it in ages but I do like
the stuff. I need to get some sugar free syrup
with it as thats partof whats so good.I have
not made home made bread in years although its
so good but I am so afraid I will goof it up
like I did my baking powder biscuits and I though
nobody could goof up baking powder biscuits lol
Ihad a year of french in college andcan barely remember
any of it. lol

I've tried to make my own bread in the past and it always flopped, but I recently started again and have made probably 5-6 loaves and they've come out great!
The key is to make sure you let it rise like the recipe says, and not to rush it. That's always my downfall, same with making candy.

I don't know why it is called french toast, maybe the same reason we have french fries??
I love french toast, even with wheat bread it is good..I take 2 eggs and 1/2 cup of milk and mix well..Then I add a sprinkle of ginger, cinnamon,a little clove and nutmeg and mix that in..This makes about 6 pieces and every 2 pieces I have to add in more of the spices..
Then right after I removed it from the griddle, I have a shaker with powdered sugar inside and I shake some of that on top..Serve with maple syrup and fresh fruit if it is in season, and enjoy!!!!

I've used regular wheat bread in the past and don't like it near as much, so I seldom make it any more.
I had strawberries in the fridge and asked hubby if he wanted me to slice some and he declined, saying he didn't think strawberries would work well with syrup. I disagree, but didn't want to cut any just for myself.

I made a couple batches of pancakes the other day and froze some, so maybe I'll put some strawberries on those instead.
I've got whipping cream to make shortcake with. Homemade whipped cream on pancakes sounds good too!

I cant understand a single syllable of French, only understood that Francais is related to France and could read it only coz you typed it out in the English text. (don’t even know what the French text looks like). But I love French toast. Typically India, I love it really spicy. I will take sliced white bread, break as many eggs as I want to, add milk, onions, green chillies, ginger and garlic (all thinly sliced) salt to taste and dip the bread and fry them real nice and brown. Yummy….my mouth’s salivating right now, got to make some in the evening today for snacks. And have it hot with tomato chilli sauce….life is soooooooo good at times.

Ok, I think I would have to call that one Indian Toast, because it sure doesn't have any resemblance to French Toast as the rest of us know it, LOL ...
By French text, do you mean the actual characters/letters? If so, they are the same as in the English alphabet.

Can't make French Toast?
Isn't that un-American!
(LOL, I've still got it, even this early in the day)
It's not hard to do. Just mix egg with a little milk, add a touch of vanilla and cinnamon, dunk the bread in, turn it over, flop it onto the skillet or griddle, give it a minute or so and turn over.
Piece of cake! Errr, toast!

No, I don't know but a couple of words in French. I took Spanish in high school and college. Good thing too because my husband and in-laws are (mostly) Mexican and speak fluent Spanish. I don't speak it all that well but I can understand most of it.
As for French Toast, I have no idea why it is called that but I do like to eat it!
I make mine at home all the time but only with white bread. I have never used homemade bread because I have yet to make my own bread. I did get a breadmaker for Christmas. I have been too chicken to try it out. I really need to though because I love fresh bread! I really want a good recipe for Sourdough!

I'd love to know how! Do you have a recipe?
My mom used to make bread in the oven when I was little but she hasn't done it for years and years.

Bread machine bread is very easy, but I recently started making my own without using a machine. It is soooo much better!

I love french toast. It is one of my favorites for breakfast, although I do not eat it very often due to the fact that it would only make me that much fatter! LoL!
I eat mine with salt & butter on top... YUM! I don't like syrup too much, only occasionally. On my pancakes I put on butter & sugar. I make my french toast with regular white bread. I have never made my own bread before. Do you have a bread maker or do you make it homemade? I bet it is really tasty!

I've recently started making my own bread totally from scratch, no machine. So far so good!
You put SALT on French Toast? Wow, never heard of that ...

LoL... yes I put salt on my french toast. I guess I have my mother to blame for that one. Oh, and I also have to blame her for putting mayonaise on my broccoli and also mayo on my grilled cheese sandwiches! That is great you are making your own bread from scratch now. I will have to get motivated some day and try to make some too. My ex-brother-in-law makes the best homemade bread! My former boss made really good bread too. She used to give us all mini-loaves on holidays as gifts. Boy do I miss that!

Oh, and I almost forgot... I did take French for two years in high school. I did not too very well. I can understand it better than I can speak it. But, still not good enough to get by in France without taking some refresher courses or at least having a french/english translation booklet on hand! :)

Do I speak french yes I do, my family is french. Do I make french toast, not very often, it is too rich, and I tend to only use sugar as the topping, all this extra stuff, jam and syrup is just to rich for my liking. I only used your everyday bread, wonder bread or pom or what have you

That's one of the reasons I don't make it often. I never cook for just myself anyway, so if I had company I might do pancakes or French toast.
Now that I have hubby here with me, we're both expanding in girth!

You know I learned French back in school and got an A* on the final exam. That was nearly ten years ago now and I'm ashamed to say I barely remember a word of it. I suppose that if you don't use it you lose it!
I'm not a fan of French Toast. I have a phobia of egg!

My father's family was all French-Canadienne so I was able to pick up the accent very easily, but never really learned but a word or two from him.
I took French my freshman year of high school and got straight As too. Didn't half know what I was saying, but I could memorize it and of course sounded good with the accent.

I like french toasts. But I have not made them lately. I love the ones at Denny's and I guess they are better than the ones I make. But if I have to make them myself, I would use wheat bread since that's the kind of bread that I usually buy. I don't make my own bread, so naturally I would always use the ones I bought from the store. And one important thing about my french toast, is the special Maine maple syrup... yummy.

I usually eat wheat or some other form of grain bread too, and I don't think the French toast turns out as well, so that's why I don't make it very often.
When I made this bread yesterday I thought that would be a good thing to try, and it was great!
I miss the pure maple syrup of home too. I was born n raised in NH, so we could get some of the more local good stuff too.

I speak enough French to know what your title said...and to pick out a few other words here and there.
French toast with homemade bread is the best- nice and thick. I make it with wheat...? anyway, I whisk a few eggs, dip the bread in it and fry it up. Then I serve it with syrup and powdered sugar sifted onto it. YUM! Holy COW that sounds so good...I think I am going to have to make bread tonight- I have a bottle of pure maple syrup calling my name from the pantry.

I speak a little French (an only a little, lol) - I studied it for 4 years in high school but have forgotten most, I am learning again from a friend from France & my new sister in law is also French. I love french toast - we make it from egg, milk and nutmeg or salt and pepper. Not sure why it's called French toast though, sorry.

Oui, je parle le francais. un peu. :) I got all A's and A*'s in my French exams when I was 16, I'm now 21 and have forgotten most of it but know enough to get by if I went to France.
Anyway, I've not had French toast for a long time, I do enjoy it though! I call it 'Eggy Bread!'

Ah yes, just a little. If I remember any phrase from freshman French class, it's that one! (I always use 'tres' in front of it, though).
I'm 50, so I've got to reach a lot further back than you do!
