Parlez vous Francais? |

Do you? Do you speak French?
Or at least French Toast?
I made two loaves of bread yesterday, one wheat, one white. I just cut up some of the white bread and going to make French Toast this morning. I've heard it was good but I've never tried it myself, except for what I've been served at a restaurant.
Before now I've only used regular store-bought bread, and white works best. I don't make French Toast often because it doesn't work as well with wheat bread, and I rarely buy white bread anymore.
Do you like French Toast? How do you make yours? Have you made it with homemade bread?
Why do we call it French Toast anyway?

12. RLFinNash (5721) | 2 years ago | hello ldyjarhead
no, i do not think that i would enjoy french toast made with wheat bread either. and also, i do not make french toast very often at all at home. but instead of white bread to make french toast with, you need a thicker kind of bread like texas toast or french bread or some kind of bread like that to make the french toast with. i have ordered french toast before at Cracker Barrel for breakfast and they use thick sliced sourdough bread to make their french toast with and they serve it with warm maple syrup. some french toast and a small bowl of fried apples sounds delicious. good luck to ya on making french toast at home.
have a beautiful evening.

Ldyjarhead (5170) | 2 years ago | That's why I thought the homemade bread would be good, it's much more like something you'd get in a restaurant.
And it WAS good!

13. hornswaggled (1913) | 2 years ago | I love french toast! I do make it with homemade bread whenever I have some leftover but I like it when it's a couple of days old as it's almost too tender to use when it's fresh. I also like to make it with freshly grated nutmeg in the egg batter for a great flavor! Thanks...I may just have to have this tomorrow!

Ldyjarhead (5170) | 2 years ago | Yes, it's a good use of stale bread, for sure! I usually cut mine and then lay it out exposed for a while before dunking it in the egg mixture. Homemade bread dries out quicker than store-bought, so it doesn't take long.
Yummy!

14. moneyandgc (3083) | 2 years ago | No, I don't know but a couple of words in French. I took Spanish in high school and college. Good thing too because my husband and in-laws are (mostly) Mexican and speak fluent Spanish. I don't speak it all that well but I can understand most of it.
As for French Toast, I have no idea why it is called that but I do like to eat it! I make mine at home all the time but only with white bread. I have never used homemade bread because I have yet to make my own bread. I did get a breadmaker for Christmas. I have been too chicken to try it out. I really need to though because I love fresh bread! I really want a good recipe for Sourdough!

Ldyjarhead (5170) | 2 years ago | I've tried to make my own bread in the past and it always flopped, but I recently started again and have made probably 5-6 loaves and they've come out great!
The key is to make sure you let it rise like the recipe says, and not to rush it. That's always my downfall, same with making candy.

16. hiccup (6438) | 2 years ago | I butter the total of the bread, I spread this way then I turn the bread around and I butter again to make sure the butter is all across the bread, right to the very corners, YUM, YUM, YUM.

Ldyjarhead (5170) | 2 years ago | What does buttering your bread have to do with French Toast?

|
hiccup (6438) | 2 years ago | Sorry bit confused,
Egg and milk drop the bread in and golden fry.
can do that but then cut a round hole out of the centre and drop and egg into it and fry all together........works well.

17. sudiptacallingu (7076) | 2 years ago | I cant understand a single syllable of French, only understood that Francais is related to France and could read it only coz you typed it out in the English text. (don’t even know what the French text looks like). But I love French toast. Typically India, I love it really spicy. I will take sliced white bread, break as many eggs as I want to, add milk, onions, green chillies, ginger and garlic (all thinly sliced) salt to taste and dip the bread and fry them real nice and brown. Yummy….my mouth’s salivating right now, got to make some in the evening today for snacks. And have it hot with tomato chilli sauce….life is soooooooo good at times.

Ldyjarhead (5170) | 2 years ago | Ok, I think I would have to call that one Indian Toast, because it sure doesn't have any resemblance to French Toast as the rest of us know it, LOL ...
By French text, do you mean the actual characters/letters? If so, they are the same as in the English alphabet.

18. koalatbs (564) | 2 years ago | I love french toast. It is one of my favorites for breakfast, although I do not eat it very often due to the fact that it would only make me that much fatter! LoL! I eat mine with salt & butter on top... YUM! I don't like syrup too much, only occasionally. On my pancakes I put on butter & sugar. I make my french toast with regular white bread. I have never made my own bread before. Do you have a bread maker or do you make it homemade? I bet it is really tasty!

koalatbs (564) | 2 years ago | Oh, and I almost forgot... I did take French for two years in high school. I did not too very well. I can understand it better than I can speak it. But, still not good enough to get by in France without taking some refresher courses or at least having a french/english translation booklet on hand!:)

Ldyjarhead (5170) | 2 years ago | I've recently started making my own bread totally from scratch, no machine. So far so good!
You put SALT on French Toast? Wow, never heard of that ...
| |
|
|
koalatbs (564) | 2 years ago | LoL... yes I put salt on my french toast. I guess I have my mother to blame for that one. Oh, and I also have to blame her for putting mayonaise on my broccoli and also mayo on my grilled cheese sandwiches! That is great you are making your own bread from scratch now. I will have to get motivated some day and try to make some too. My ex-brother-in-law makes the best homemade bread! My former boss made really good bread too. She used to give us all mini-loaves on holidays as gifts. Boy do I miss that!
