Eeek!! A curious swelling, what on earth could it be? |
|
I had a lovely day today, the weather was beautiful, sunny and very warm and I spent some time enjoying it. I walked down to school with my daughter to pick up my two boys and we had a leisurely stroll back home. On the way home I dropped something and bent to pick it up, and that is when I noticed it, a thick stump that was supposed to be my leg!! I had to look twice, was that really MY leg, from my calf down to my toes it was completely swollen and twice the size of my other leg. I wonder if anyone else noticed it?How on earth could I not have noticed this?? More importantly what on earth caused it? I have not got a clue, all I know is that the bottom half of my leg is completely swollen, there is no pain, no sign of a bite, I have not twisted it or anything. Does anyone know what could be causing it? Has anyone else ever had a strange swelling happen before? I have attached a photo of the offending stump, please note it is not as swollen as it was and please do not laugh at the state of my legs!!!

3. OreoCookie3 (13266) | 4 months ago | That is really scary, and it makes me wonder if you have some form of cellulitis or something. I also wondered about right heart failure.. seems it can make the left leg more swollen, but I forgot so much from my nursing days I could be wrong on that. You really should get that seen about.

gemini_rose (7260) | 4 months ago | Eek, heart failure, I do get a lot of heart skipping beats, but I have always had it. I had my heart checked out 2 years ago and it was fine then, but maybe I should go back again, thank you for your concern.

4. hachimitsu (865) | 4 months ago | It looks like serious water retention to me. Maybe the cause of bad circulation as well. But anyway, as others have suggested, definitely go to the doctor; even if the symptoms go away, they may be a sign of something more serious.

7. mummymo (10500) | 4 months ago | My Goodness sweety - and this wasn't as bad as it was? I was going to say it could be water retention with the hot weather this sometimes gets worse! It may be nothing to worry about sweetheart but I really want you to try and see the dr first thing - please - just to be sure that it is nothing serious - if you cannot get an appointment I would suggest you go to the nearest casualty! I am not trying to scare you and as I said it could be nothing but with a swelling that bad you really have to check it out! xxx

9. hornswaggled (871) | 4 months ago | Gemini, This area...is it hot? I mean is it hotter to the touch than the other foot? Is it painful? These are things that might indicate a clot. If not then there might be as Ellie said a bite. It wouldn't be edema in one foot and not the other. I would have it checked but I don't think it's the heart as this is usually a symmetrical swelling in both legs. It might just be an atopic dermatitis which is a fancy name for an allergic reaction on the skin. Let us know would you? I would like to see how your doing with this! Good luck and you keep off that foot and keep it raised ok?

10. drknlvly6781 (2131) | 4 months ago | Yipe!!! I would go to the emergency room to get it checked out. Even though its not hurting, it seems pretty serious to be swelling like that for no apparent reason. Are you sure you didn't get bit by something? The leg may be swollen too much to see where you got bit. Also, since you say you took a stroll home, maybe you brushed against something you are allergic to. I don't really know what's going on, but I do know that legs simply do not swell up for no reason. If I were you, I would get it checked out just to make sure it isn't something serious.

gemini_rose (7260) | 4 months ago | Well I am pretty sure I did not get bit, I must admit it did cross my mind. But I cannot see any point of entry, and I would have thought that there would be some mark if I had been bit. I will get it checked out if it is no better by tomorrow, but the swelling has gone down a lot.
