Kidnapped Labs  |

 We recently had our white male lab mix stolen from the lane leading to our house. Our older female black lab mix was with him and evidently escaped as she returned home without her collar and with what appeared to be marks from a catch wire on her nose.
Once we started inquiring around, we learned that labs and lab mixes being stolen is a widespread problem. Others in our state have had dogs stolen out of locked kennels in their back yards. Both Montana and Wyoming have ongoing investigations going due to numerous dognappings.
It is believed that these dogs are being stolen and sold to dog fighting rings to use as "bait" to train the fighting dogs. It is horrible to think that our beloved pet might have fallen into the hands of these terrible people.
Have you noticed any increase in dog disappearances in your area?

I'm really sorry that your dogs were stolen, I am very very glad that one returned home, and while I hope your fears are not right, I fear that you may be right in your guess and speculations are very very correct, and its not right that it happens to innocent animals like this, and they probably go for labs because they are very easy going dogs and very trusting.

| newtondak (546) | 2 months ago | Unfortunately this happens in the country too! We live in a rural area, at least 30 miles from any town of substantial size. Our closest neighbor lives a half mile away. At most, there might be six cars that go by our house in a day's time (an one of those is the mail carrier!)
This is a close knit community and even before this happened, people took notice of "strangers" appearing in the area, but with this incident, everyone is even more alert.

| 3. blackbriar (4856) | 2 months ago |  So very sorry to hear about your dog being stolen. As much as I hate to say it, being 'bait' is prolly what happened to the poor guy. Soon after moving here, we heard that dogs were disappearing from their yards. Few days later, someone who claimed they were from animal control came and said someone called in saying our dog was being mistreated and they wanted to see her. I told her she was in her kennel around back but not to put their fingers in or they would lose them. She was going off on them like I've never heard b4 and when I went to see what was happening, one of them was about to open her door with a leash in hand. I went out and told the person to stop right there or I'll give her the signal to nail em. They didn't believe me so I gave her the signal and she had them both on the ground at once daring them to move. Called the police on them right away. After that I put a lock on her kennel so noone could take her. They would of used her as a fighting dog, thou, not a bait dog. Still, she would of ended up dying a cruel death regardless. Now I have my lab/pit mix that I never leave out in the yard by himself. So far, no more hearing about dogs being stolen but it could happen anytime of the day/night.
