My Work Collegues Dog Is Allergic To Flea Bites? Wants A Natural Remedy Please |
|
My work collegues dog has fleas even though she treats regularly but is allergic to the bites. I suggested putting garlic into the dog food once a week as that is known to repel them and maybe use some citronella oil, she wants to use a natural product. Have you got any natural remedy ides that she could use because her dog is obviously in a lot of discomfort. Please share. Ellie:D

tessah (2615) | 2 years ago | my home was infested with the little buggers so badly that i was scoping out exterminators to ake care of the problem.. my father in law dragged me out into the woods instead, and we gathered the tansy.. brought it home, and laid bunches of it under the rugs and under the beds.. worked like a charm.. and within a week, they were all gone, and i havent had a single one back since!!

2. sedel1027 (12398) | 2 years ago | Don't give the dog garlic, it can be toxic! Adding apple cider vinegar to his water will work.
| |
| |
|
|
ellie333 (6792) | 2 years ago | Thanks for advice, why is garlic toxic for dogs, it is supposed to be okay for cats isn't it? I will definately mention the apple cider vinegar though and would this work for cats too do you know? Ellie:D
| |
|
|
sedel1027 (12398) | 2 years ago | Garlic and onions is toxic to both dogs and cats. The apple cider vinegar would work on both animals.

|
|
ellie333 (6792) | 2 years ago | Thanks sedel, I will pass on this information to her and also try the apple cider viegar for my cats. Ellie:D

3. MichaelJay (925) | 2 years ago | I agre that the cider vinegar should work for both dogs and cats. Most dogs have cat fleas abyway as they are much more common and harder to eradicate. Just a few drops in the pts' drinking watr, not enough to make it taste unattractive to the dogs or cats, and it gets into their bloodstream and the fleas are repelled by it. Worked in our house, anyway, and we have both cat and dog!

ellie333 (6792) | 2 years ago | Thanks MichealJay, I will definately tell her to try and also will give a try with my cats. Thanks for sharing. Ellie:D

4. olivemai (2791) | 2 years ago | I think there are some essential oils that help keep fleas away! I use lavender oil and it works well! Look for a product at a health store for something natural that will work and not be poisonous either!
| |
| |
|
|
ellie333 (6792) | 2 years ago | I think citronella oil is supposed to be very good but I have also now been, which is the plant Tessa has pictured in response one and also apple cider vinegar in their drinking water too. So I will forward these suggestions to my work collegue and she will be able to decide which to try. Thanks for sharing Olivemai. Ellie:D

ellie333 (6792) | 2 years ago | Thanks emeraldisle, I thought garlic as well but another response has said not to give as it can be toxic so I am really confused. Thanks for the tip re the amethyst I have by computer myself but never knew that to put into the water it could have that effect. I have some eucalytus oil but no branches but will try to pick some up as I have cats and I will pass all these tips onto my work collegue. Thank you so much for sharing, much appreciated. Ellie:D

ellie333 (6792) | 2 years ago | Hi I have always used garlic myself but I was getting a lot of conflicting reports. I really appreciate you taking the time to look up the information and really appreciate it. Strange that you mention Avon Skin So Soft as I haven't sensitive skin but I cannot use this particular product as it brings me out in bliser type spots, weird huh. Ellie:D
| |
|
|
emeraldisle (8978) | 2 years ago | I'd used garlic with our dogs and never had a problem either. It was a surprise to see people warn against it.
That is weird with the Avon skin so soft. For me it makes it impossible to breath. My dog became listless, just laid around until I washed it off him.
Something else you can check for is Capstar, it's a pill to give cats and dogs. It kills the fleas within minutes. We get ours from PAWS but many places sell it. It's usually given once every few months. It's great to get rid of them and then you can use the other stuff to keep them gone. I think one pill is $3 to $5.

ellie333 (6792) | 2 years ago | Hi Littleowl, I have had varying opinions re the garlic even though I always thought it was ok someone else like you said to use and then someone else said not to as it was toxic to dogs and cats so I am very confused. I will forward all suggestions to my work colleague. Yes Frontline is so expensive. Cider vinegar was another suggestion that seems to have worked and also a plant called tansy. Thanks for sharing. ellie333 (6792) | 2 years ago | Have you read the amethyst rock solution you'll love it, its in one of the earlier responses but just says to put amethyst into dogs water bowl, it doesn't harm them but the fleas hate it. Good one eh! Ellie:D

7. winterose (17638) | 2 years ago | you might try bathing him in a solution of vinegar and water, they don't like vinegar either. I have been plagued with flea bites going on three years now, this year I haven\t let my cat out and it seems to be better so far, I hope it stays that way.

ellie333 (6792) | 2 years ago | Someone suggested cider vinegar in their drinking water so bathing in vinegar would work too on their coat. Thanks for sharing will let my work colleague know. Ellie:D

8. OreoCookie3 (18478) | 2 years ago | I actually heard on here that garlic could be bad for dogs.. not sure if that is true.. I gave Brewer's yeast tablets to my animals years ago and I think it worked. I was told that was a natural remedy.. I think the stuff from the vet is the best thing to do though... the other stuff takes so much time to build up in their blood.
| |
| |
|
|
ellie333 (6792) | 2 years ago | Hi Oreo, there does seem to be some confusion over the garlic issue as many seem to use but some seem to think it is toxic to dogs and cats so I am really not sure on this, but people do definately say it has worked. Brewers yeast is a great one. I will share this with my work colleague. Ellie:D

10. Loverbear (1690) | 2 years ago | She needs to use the garlic more than once a week! When I lived in Thailand I ate food prepared with garlic daily and soon I didn't have problems with mosquitos and other biting pests. She needs to give the dog garlic (preferably fresh) daily. Anywhere from a clove for a tiny dog to several large cloves for a big dog. Also mix brewer's yeast into the dog's food daily too. Brewers yeast can either be powdered or tablet. If it's tablet, use for or five per day. If it's powdered use a tablespoon or so. Brewers yeast won't hurt the dog and any excess will be eliminated naturally. It makes the dog awful tasting to the fleas. In the meantime she needs to plant marigolds around her home, they are a natural pest repellent. Also, she can sprinkle borax in her carpet. It repels fleas and drys out their eggs. Really dust the areas where the dog sleeps with the borax. It won't hurt the dog but will eliminate the fleas.
I have only one thing about the garlic, with the dog consuming the garlic it will kind of make his breath smell like a Pizzeria! (LOL) The garlic works for my dogs, they are flea free throughout the summer.
To sooth the itch, she might try tea bags. (Although if the dog is white it will dye it tan...)

ellie333 (6792) | 2 years ago | Thanks you so much for all this information I will pass on to her at work and hopefully her dog can then be flea free. I don''t know the colour but if dark with mention the tea bag for soothing the skin too. Thank you also for giving quantity amounts as that will be really helpful also. Appreciate the time you have taken to share this. Ellie:D

olivemai (2791) | 2 years ago | So that is why I do not get bit as often as when I was a kid! It changes the taste of your blood!
| |
|
|
Loverbear (1690) | 2 years ago | It has been stated that garlic is toxic to dogs, in huge amounts it is, but for what you would be giving the dog is won't hurt him. Also Eucalyptus oil is wonderful for flea control. Many people collect the pods that the trees drop and make a collar for their animals out of it.
It is kind of funny to find out now that garlic and onions are toxic to dogs as our dogs always ate them...and we didn't loose one to garlic or onions. In fact we used garlic to de-worm our dogs!
| |
|
|
ellie333 (6792) | 2 years ago | Yes there does seem to be a lot of conflicting evidence on this but I myself have always gone with garlic with the cats and as you say your dogs have always been fine. I think anything in excessive amounts can be dangerous even water so maybe the story was started by a company that manufactures flea treatments, who knows. I still appreciate all your help and advice though. Ellie:D
Olivemai, I guess you eat a lot of garlic yourself now then! LOL.
Ellie:D

Loverbear (1690) | 2 years ago | I do eat quite a bit of garlic...I'm Italian so I guess that comes naturally. I had one other thought for flea control, and that is if the dog wears a collar she can use a drop of eucalyptus oil on the underside of the collar. I am sure she can find it at a natural food store or a store that carries essential oils. It's another thought. My Mom had a dog that was horribly allergic to flea bites...she would chew herself raw all summer long until we started working borax into the carpet. Also put some in the vacuum cleaner bag because when you vacuum you also vacuum up the little varmints!
Anyway, I'm off to bed, I am still trying to kick this stupid migraine (it's going into its 16th day...ouch!)I also am going to check my herb and natural remedy books and see what suggestions they offer. No one's companion animal should have to suffer from fleas!....Toni
| |
|
|
ellie333 (6792) | 2 years ago | Thanks Toni, yes it makes sense to put the essential oil under the collar and the powder in the hoover bag as they get in there when we hoover. 16 days is a long time to have a migraine headache, it could be through eyestrain if you have been at the computer for a while, please rest well and I really hope you headache has gone by the time you awake. I hada a thumping one the other day and went to bed and slept over eleven hours but I awoke without the headache. Thanks once again for all your input ito this and I am not only sharing with my work colleague but my neighbour now is so interested in all these remedies everyone is coming up with. Ellie:D
