Spelling police email this discussion to a friend?

I know I make a lot of spelling mistakes. For one english is not my native language, and two: I have a cognitive difficulty. But I do my best, and I think it is interesting and fun to write and be read anyways. I do look up a few words, but not every single one. My mistakes may be made with the simplest words sometimes - my cognitive difficulty does not discriminate.

I usually do not mind when peope correct me, but sometimes I do. Maybe one could tell people about their spellingmistakes somewhere else than in the middle of a discussion? Maybe a private message would do?

So, are you bothered by peoples spelling mistakes? Do you correct them? How?

If English is a person's first language it sometimes bothers me if they don't use it correctly or if they misspell a word but as English is your second language i think you are doing pretty well! Good on you for mastering English, it's such a difficult language to learn!

I speak a second language, which is Japanese, and i really appreciate people being understanding when i talk in Japanese, that they don't try to correct me too much or make me feel embarrassed about my ability. It's good to get pointers every now and then but i think it's rude to constantly correct another person, especially when they are doing so well. Most people know what you meant when you spelled something wrong or mistyped and it's just plain picky to keep correcting it.

Good luck with your posting! Keep up the great work:)

Thank you!

Oh it would be really nice to be able to speak Japanese.
I think it is far better to encourage people that try to learn or use a new language than constantly pick on them. Sometimes it is good to get some tips and corrections also. But there is a time and place for everything. I would never correct someone that I did not know at all, unless I was invited.

Thanks for your views on this!

Since English is not your mother tongue(as is the case with me) you shouldn't be worrying quite a lot over your spellings. After all, I feel that you are expressing considerably well in a language that is alien to you. Good luck.

i dont used to correct their mistake, i just let them to kwn what their mistake, oz in the long run i knw they will learn by expressing theirself and that how i do learning is a continous process for me that is poor in lingo, but except for the pronunciation i will never understand anymore.

Spelling mistakes will happen, even when you use spell check and proof read your comment, the little mistakes will get thru,
SO its no good of getting upset about it, just keep posting

myLot reputation of 97/100. teison2 (4546)   ranked 297 out of 9,520 in internet  3 months ago

Yes, mistakes do happen to me even though I proof-read over and over. Sometimes it is just hard to see it I think. Noone gets better if they do not practise.
Thanks for responding:-)
I even made the digest this time. My first!

I think I have become a bit more relaxed about my obsession with people's spelling and grammar. One can usually tell when the person writing does not have English as their first language and all due respect to them for trying and typing in English when I can't type in another language to save my life. What does bug me is people being lazy and using text speak in discussions or when writing online articles and the thing that bugs me the MOST about reading things online is when people use i when referring to themselves instead of I - nowhere in the world when you learn English do they tell you that I should be written as i and it's so commonly done by British people that it annoys the heck out of me! I have seen responses to discussions here like "i fink ur rite" and that's it! What kind of input is that to a discussion? The person is clearly going around writing as little as possible hoping everyone will click the + next to their response/comment and hope to earn lots of money from the smallest effort. Ok I'll stop going on about that aspect of online typos - in general if I feel something is really poorly written and is difficult to understand I would rather point it out in a private message but that is difficult to do on this site unless the person is on your friends' list, so I tend to move on past discussions where the spelling and grammar is so poor that I get eyestrain trying to understand what they're actually trying to say.

By the way, I've seen your discussions and responses and feel you always make a good effort to write nicely - all due respect to you for being so good at a foreign language. xx

I so agree about the text speak. That's just plain old laziness.

myLot reputation of 97/100. teison2 (4546)   ranked 297 out of 9,520 in internet  3 months ago

Thank you!

I always try to do my best. Sometimes my spelling and grammar are worse than usual, and I should probably wait until my mind works a bit better before writing something.

Lazyness when it comes to grammar and spelling bugs me. I like for people to do as good as they can - to make an effort. I think it has gotten a lot worse since people started sending sms-messages. Now it seems like people transfer their way of texting to other places also. I do not like that. Sometimes I wonder if people still know how to write properly at all. How do their letters to the insurance company or the government look?

I make so many typos myself that I am hardly going to correct someone's errors in front of everyone. If I see a phrase that a friend maybe needed help with, I'd PM. Mostly I just ignore them and assume it's a typo.

myLot reputation of 97/100. teison2 (4546)   ranked 297 out of 9,520 in internet  3 months ago

Typos do happen. I think a nice pm is a good way to go to help someone thumbup

nope.i have better things to do than pick on people's spelling.
as long as i can still understand what they mean,i'm good.
english is my first language and i make mistakes from time to time,so who am i to speak?;)

Most everyone makes mistakes.

Sometimes it might be hard to get the point due to misspelling. If that happens I am fine with people saying something so I can explain what I was trying to get across. Once, in another site, I had a completely unknown person write a comment about a word that I had misspelled. That was all. No comment on the topic what so ever. That bugged me.

myLot reputation of 99/100. scarlet_woman (4868)   ranked 1,318 out of 9,520 in internet  3 months ago

yup.i've had that happen.
5000 posts on one board,the 5001st where i mispelled
one word, somebody came out of the woodwork to point it out LOL

Hello! I think it's a bit rude to correct spelling errors unless it's something that my kids are turning in for a school assignment, or unless someone asks me for help. I guess a good idea would be to incorporate the misspelled word into the response so that when it's read, the difference can be seen. Personally, I think that your writing is very good! It's a lot better than a lot of other things I read in here which are posted by people whose native language is English.

myLot reputation of 97/100. teison2 (4546)   ranked 297 out of 9,520 in internet  3 months ago

Thank you for your kind words!

Including the misspelled word in the response is a very good way of doing it, I think. I often learn from that.

Try installing the Google toolbar on your computer. As well as several other useful features, it includes a spell checker which will function in several languages.
