Boycott video games! | | | | I am a firm believer that children need to play a lot less video games and that we need to channel their energies into much more productive activities. We had a rule as our children grew up that for every hour they spent playing computer/video games, they were required to do something educational, whether researching or reading something on the computer or reading a book, etc. etc. As they grew older and the price of video games became more unreasonable, we chose not to have them in our home. The kids joined 4-H and participated in other school and church activities. The money we saved from not buying video games was spent on musical instruments and lessons. What do you do to remove your child's attention from video games and redirect it elsewhere? | | | | | | | | | | Ask a Lawyer: Child Law A Family Lawyer Will Answer Now! Child Law Answers Today: 87. | | I don't see anything wrong with video games - in moderation. I might not be the best parental example as I do overdo it a little when I get a new game. Parents use video games as cheap babysitters and that is only going to hurt kids when they get older. Our general rule is that you can play as long as you want as long as all school work, chores and other obligations are met. My boys are homeschooled so they are extremely focused on school work but they have been known to blow a whole weekend on a new game or trying to beat a game that they rented or borrowed from someone. | | | | | | | newtondak (2145)

| | I understand what you're saying, but aren't there more healthy and productive activities that you would like to have your children engage in? | | | | | | | Ask a Lawyer: Child Law A Family Lawyer Will Answer Now! Child Law Answers Today: 87. Law.JustAnswer.com/Child | add comment | | | |

| | Kids are not the only ones who play video games, as adults play them, and the military use them for training. Parents just need to control how much time their kids spend playing video games. They also need to pay attention to the game's ratings and the age group they were made for. | | | | | | | | | | In Child Support Free Consultation & Low Cost Legal Help. | | For those who see nothing wrong with the games and are good at monitoring and keeping the kids away from them, but for a little bit of time, limit tv viewing, get them to read, have free playtime (not scheduled events), and let them be involved in one or two activities, allowing them more free time, again, that's fine. But too many people don't pay attention and allow the kids to be raised by the electronics because it's easier. THAT'S the problem! | | | | | | | Buy Ray-Ban Sunglasses Save 30-50% on Ray-Ban Sunglasses. Free Shipping Worldwide. www.ShadesDaddy.com | add comment | | | |

| | Thanks for the best response. I appreciate it. I am not saying, to others, that I am against these things, but today's society allows it too much. If only everyone could learn to do it in moderation, it would be fine. But I would rather have my kids out there and learning the skills of communication and interaction with others, being more physical, etc. I can do any video game, computer skill, etc., and I did not have these growing up. I did not have computers and calculators to do homework and math. I had to use my head. I see people who cannot do math without calculators or computers, can't write long hand, don't know how to write a formal letter, fill out a Christmas card, write a thank you note. They can't spell because they are so busy using netspeak abbreviations. I know adults, who have grown up without these skills and can't write properly, can't spell and have limited vocabulary because they never read enough books. We need to go back to the THREE R's, reading, 'riting, 'rythmetic, and get kids back on track. Our country has gone so down hill (usa) in schools, it's sad. I fear for the future. | | | | | | | | | | Child Development Degree Earn your Child Development Associate Certificate at home. www.PennFoster.edu | add comment | | | |
