We started the day right, we went from one house to another. We are celebrating today our annual town fiesta. We were having fun, and whoolah!!! That damn dog of my neighbor, bit my youngest son on his right leg. I was shocked, but too glad that I had presence of mind when that happened. Some advised me to scrub a garlic on the wound itself. But good thing I know first aid. I automatically wash the wound with soap and water for 10 minutes. Then I rushed him to the nearest hospital to have shots. Whew!!! He had to be injected 3 shots on his shoulder and 1 shot on the wound itself. I felt pity for my son coz he was really crying. I know it really hurts but we have to do it to prevent the rabies from spreadening. I learned that there is no cure for rabies but only prevention. I was so nervous coz I've seen from documentaries of what is the effect of rabies to humans and it was really scary. I hope someday, someone would find cure for rabies. Right now my son is sleeping but I have to apply hot compress on his wound. I hope this will never happen again. And I won't let it happen again.

Thats sad about your son. Im a firm believer in its always the owners fault never the animals. I have a pitt bull mix pup right now and he is just the sweetest dog ever. He even sleeps with my 3 year old son they cuddle up to eachother and both go right to sleep LOL. He is still a pup though so he tends to kind of nip at the kids sometimes, but any type of puppy does that. They all out grow it unless taught other wise. Ive had dogs since I was born. My parents bred dogs. So I have learned real quick that dogs ONLY act how they have been taught to act...on some rare occasions there are dogs that sometimes start acting out and arent showed what the right way to act is so they just continue being bad dogs...those cases are so sad to see. If I were you I wouldnt only watch the dog but the owners as well. Watch how they treat the dog. And if they keep him chained up all the time...and just gets excited when ppl get close to him. I hate chains I will never put a dog on a chain. But if the dog doesnt start acting any better the owners may get another dog....and if they treat that dog the same way what happened with your son will more then likely happen again with ANY dog they have. I hope your son is feeling better by now. Rabies really is a scary thing. There is a cat with rabbies running around here that no one can seem to catch. My dad has tried shooting it but the little booger sure does have 9 lives LOL.

That was quick thinking on your part. Good job, mom! It is a shame when these things happen in the middle of a good time. I had to go for a tetnus shot after being bitten on the face by a small dog. It happens sometimes. I hope he will be fine.

The dog was loose, but we have it tied up for observation. I am thankful that I had first aid training before so I knew what to do. I will be having a conversation with the owner later. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for your concern.

That is aweful what happend to your son being bitten by the neighbors dog. We never know when haveing a good time when something seriouse is going to happen like w/ your son and the happy moment is gone and your struck w/ fear and haveing to deal w/ a medical emergency. I'm glad you took care of it and brought him to the nearest hospital for further checking. I hope he is ok now and that it won't happen again. Have you talked to the owners of the dog? was the dog tied up or just running loose? I would personally have the owner's of the dog pay for all medical exspenses.

Thanks, the dog was tied up. I will be having a conversation with them tomorrow. They really have to pay for my son's medical expenses. I could not shoulder everything coz we all know that these shots are really expensive. We will be observing the dogs' behavior for 2 weeks. My son will be having his shots again on Monday and another on Thursday.

As she says in her thread starter, she took him immediately to the hospital after washing it thoroughly. PRevention is the door, but how to prevent a vicious dog from biting him? Very true though.

Oh that's sad. We have dogs before, they're just too upbeat and gets excited when they see people. I always get bitten when I arrive but the dog has been injected so it's okay and it's not that bad. I mean its just a scratch. Anwyay, I hope your neighbor will something with their dog.

wow...That is too bad, that's the problem in our Country since the dogs are everywhere and we are not sure if they were given anti rabies vaccine. Good thing that you were able to do the right thing since rabies is real scary! I know he will be fine tomorrow and I am sure by that experience, he will be scared of any dog now!

I hope he wasn't teasing the dog. I hope your neighbor learned his lesson! Dogs should not be allowed to run about outside of caretaker's yard - and they should have all their shots in case the worst happens - as it happened to you. I have a young son, and I worry about things like this. I want to be able to protect him from everything but know I can't. Even at the playground he may one day fall and hurt himself. Its hard enough if he falls now in his new waddling walk and bites his lip or something, so hard to know I can't prevent pain or take it away! Nice to learn about the garlic! You are such a good mother to be calm and do what's right despite the stressful situation!

You got nervous but had the prescence of mind to do what was necessary. Today my toddler got hold of a card I thought out of his reach. It had a little dangling teddy bear on the front (it was a card for him from a while ago) he ended up pulling off and swallowing the bear before I got to him - sometimes if I'm washing dishes or the like I can't watch him every second. I try to get everything that is a no no out of his reach and put enticing things like pots and spoons within reach and eyesight. He tottered over to me and just stared with big eyes and gagged a bit. My heart leaped in my chest but I immediately turned him over and whacked him on the back and it came shooting up. Things happen...

Nope, he wasn't teasing the dog. He stepped on it's tail. We didn't even know that the dog was under his chair. Well, accidents comes unnoticed. I was trained to be calm in stressful situations such as this. I got nervous at that time, but it's normal. Thanks for sharing and respondng.

OMG. This is not a good news! You must be very careful next time. Its not really easy, havent experienced it and I hope will never experience it for I am really afraid not with the dog bites but with the medicine. I know how expensive those shots are. I hope your son will be okay.

Wow, that is a scary thing to have happen and I hope your son will have a speedy recovery. I hate when dogs are out and about . My fiance was bit by a dog when at work , and we were scared the dog might of had rabies or something else. Things worked out ,and I am glad nothing serious happened with you .

Hi ate dhang, I'm sorry to hear that. Just a month ago I was bitten too by our dog, but it just an accident. The dog bitten me in my right hand and I quickly washed it with running water for 15 minutes, washed it with soap but I never bring to hospital immediately because I know how expensive the ant-rabies in animal bite hospitals and RITM (hospitals for infectious diseases here in Philippines is only open 8-5 pm) and it was happened around 8 in the evening. Fortunately, I had my anti-rabies booster 2 years ago when I was taking my internship, then first thing in the morning I went to RITM and have my 2 booster only to complete my full exposure vaccine. Well it sad to know too that I have to go back in year 2011 for another booster, that's mandatory. The owner of the dog should pay your expenses, it's their responsibility to pay you back because they don't watch their pets.

this would be the worst problem of some locality because of some dogs free to roam around and bite people. i have a neighbor also has a dog that are very sarcastic, all of my friends Girl don't visit me anymore because they are afraid of the dog, one of them was bitten by the dog. I can't hurt the dog because we are friend not only the owner but also the dog. I advice the owner to put the dog on a cage so that it will not harm people. and the owner agreed.
