When I was a kid, my grandpa used to tell stories of his struggles during world war II here in my country. He said that because of the war, most people are poor. They have no money to buy their ration of food. Since his family were in the middle class, they were able to buy rice. But those days cooking viands were a luxury and they don't wanna spend their money. So, what they did was cook rice, and instead of a viand, they poured coffee on their rice. The reason was so that it would have some kinda taste and not just plain rice. Sometimes, when they don't have coffee, they eat it with salt! They mix the salt with the rice same reason as with coffee.. Imagine that...

Thanks. I never heard the word before. I thought maybe it was a specific kind of dish. I eat rice cooked either what I call "American style" where it is boiled in water and when almost done, a little milk is added to make it creamy. Also butter can be added to the water. Then it is put on the plate as a side dish to meats and vegetables and either white granulated or brown sugar added on top to make it sweet. It is really good that way as a side to pork dishes. I also eat rice with Chinese foods, and Mexican rice when I go to restaurants and I cook Indian Basmati rice when I make my Indian dishes. I also like brown rice but don't use it as much even though it is healthier to use.

Rice and Coffee??? I cant imagine that. I really cant imagine that. But the rice with salt is common place here. If there is really no way or no funds to buy even one piece of egg then there's nothing to it but a bit of water and salt. Other times, ketchup is also used as a viand. Thats already a luxury. The tastiest but simplest meal I have eaten with rice is rice and salted egg with a bit of tomato. yum! It doesnt cost much but it really tastes good. I guess the egg has the protein and the rice itself has the carbs for energy then the tomato has the vitamins and minerals. ITs not much but it can be considered as a good full meal to keep the stomach full.

hey there bjcyrix!! It happened to my grandpa during the war..At that time eggs were scarce and ketchup wasn't invented yet or it hasn't arrived in the Philippines yet..Times were hard those days and the only available food is rice and coffee..I tried it many times and it tasted good, to my surprise..Just mix your coffee drink with the rice and see what I mean..Thanks for the response..

Coffee and rice is nothing new to me when I was a kid. It was our regular breakfast before going to school. We normally take the overnight cold rice and mix it with hot coffee. It tasted delicious then but now my tastebud has undergone modernization and so this regular has since disappeared from my table. My breakfast has now been replaced with cornflakes, chicken porridge... no longer coffee but two-in-one!LOL
