Morality and what is 'right'. email this discussion to a friend?

I'm a big Asimov fan and am currently working my through the Foundation Saga. I'll not go into details of the series here, anyone can wiki it if they are unfamiliar and I do not intend for this to be about the series.

It is a quote from one of the characters that I am interested in. One of the Terminus mayors is quoted by other characters as saying something akin to;

"Do not let your morals get in the way of doing what is right."

This struck me as being quite sagacious.

Any thoughts on this quote? Can people put 'right' above their own personal morality?

Everyone has different ideas as to what's 'right'.
I think the one speaking has a different idea of what's right than the person he is speaking to.
Personally, I couldn't, because my morals are tied to what I think is right.

True, everyone has a different idea of what is right and personal morals are tied to this.

The mayor was not talking to anyone in particular, it was his own personal moto, in fact.

Thanks for the response.

I'm a big Asimov fan myself, have Foundation series but haven't read it yet.
Did you ever read Nightfall by him?
One of the best books out there.

Nightfall? Is it a full blown novel or a short? I've read a lot of his shorts.

Foundation is AMAZING. A friend of mine said that the third book made him twitch, because of the twist that comes in the very last sentence... Asimov is such a weaver of plot threads, it's amazing.

Oh, and when you read the third book, don't fall in love with the jester. If you're anything like me you'll be heartbroken... though I can completely say that he does not die, he does not suffer, nothing terrible at all happens to him.*wibble*

yes, full novel.
it's based on a short story by him from 1941.
This is copyrighted 1990. And co-written with Robert Silverberg. Almost 300 pages.

I LOVE Asimov, what an interesting mind he has.
He is the only author to publish books under every category.

I'll get to the Foundation series soon.
