Have You Heard About Ingeo? email this discussion to a friend?

I was exploring Kroger's web site and clicked on "new products". There I found Primo Water with bottles made of Ingeo natural plastic instead of petroleum based plastic. The blurb said that if all petroleum based plastic (PET) bottles were made of Ingeo natural plastic, Americans could save a billion gallons of gas per year.

Impressive, right?

I had never heard of Ingeo, so I did a Google search and discovered that it's made from corn.

I wonder why this hasn't been a major news item.

Here's the site about how Ingeo is made (and unmade, since it is much more recycleable):

I've heard of this and looked for products, but it doesn't seem to be widely available yet. I've also heard that using corn to make "plastic" will cause a food shortage. I really think that's just news sensationalism. We use so much corn in this country making high fructose corn syrup to poison our children with that I think we could spare some to save petroleum.
DuPont is starting to work with other companies to develop alternate fuels made from cellulose and other more available sources. Celloluse fuel would be great since this is the indigestible part of plants. It may take a few years for them to develop an economical way to mass produce it though.

Time and money is an issue. We should have been looking for alternative fuel sources for the past 20 years. I've heard that many small inventors who have made discoveries have sold them to the auto makers, who just sit on them.

This is great. And that's interesting to know about the gas. I have heard of another company that sells water and uses natural plastic as well. I'm glad that more and more people are getting the idea of 'going green'. I'm glad more people are participating in changing the world. But, what took so long? And there are still stubborn people out there.

You're right. What took so long? You know we've had the ability to do these kinds of things for years. But there has to be a "wanna do" attitude, I guess.

At first glance that sounds like a great idea... but part of the reason grocery prices are so high is that farm fields have been taken out of food production to grow corn for ethanol. So if they grow it for ingeo, we might have better containers, but no one could afford to buy what was in them! happy

Now, I would be gung ho about this IF it was created using a non food source OR the waste products of a non food source. Corn is not the way to go and the use of corn for other than food consumption has caused a horrible impact on our economy. Other than that I think it is a really innovative and ingenious idea, thanks for the information!

I hadn't heard about it, but think its a good idea. Right now, I have water delivered, so don't go down the water aisle at the store. There are a lot of green items on the grocery shelves here.

I am surprised its not on my news. It must be really costly.
