Dry Skin From Gardening  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 96/100. webeishere (12986)   ranked 1 out of 35 in dry skin 4 years ago

Okay I do a lot of gardening and seldom wear any type of work gloves or garden gloves. I wear gloves only when I will be using some type of gardening tool for an extended period of time to avoid blisters etc. My hands get so dried out from the dirt etc from all this gardening work. I use a few different types of lotions without much luck. I have had smooth skin since I started taking care of dad and not holding a "real" job so to say. Any suggestions on a good lotion to get rid of dry skin that i won't need to apply a few times daily as I do now? I use a couple of special brands and mostly Vasoline Intensive care lotion. Thanks for help and or info in advance all.

A lot of people swear by Corn Huskers Lotion, which is basically glycerin, a humectant that draws moisture to the skin. When my hands get especially dry I use my paraffin bath. It moisturizes deep down.

There is a small appliance that you can buy at Wal Mart. There are spas and chiropractors, and other places. It is warm, and has extra oils in it that make your hands soft and moistuized.

GP Bob the paraffin bath is so luxurious! I have had it done a couple of times at nail salons, on my hands and feet. The wax they use I think has more than just paraffin, anyway you melt it in a cooker looking apparatus. Then you dip your hand or foot into it once, take it out, then dip again, when it drys, (just a few seconds), peels off like plastic gloves. Your skin feels like velvet, but the results don't last long, it is just one of those feel good things we all need from time to time, Oh I am ready to do it again, just talking about it.

WHen I was having carpal tunnel like symptoms, I decided to buy one. The cost compares with having two treatments at a chiropractor or a salon. Now I own it!!happythumbup

i use "goop" (real name, swear to god)to get the dirt out, then vitamin e cream for the dryness.that stuff is incredible.my hands were as smooth as a baby's after using it.

myLot reputation of 96/100. webeishere (12986)   ranked 1 out of 35 in dry skin  4 years ago

I love GOOP. It cleans even the hardest to wash off things like grease and oils. Any particular brand of lotion with Vitamin E in it?

oh yea it does!great for washing off oil paints.
nothing else got that fully off my hands.

i use the "nature's bounty" e cream.walmart and walgreens usually have it.it's a wee pricey, but worth every penny.

You can also buy a store brand vitamin E capsules, they are real cheap, use a safety pin to puncture the coating and squeeze into hands, rub in like lotion, works well on sun burn, stretch marls, and helps to heal scars. I had forgotten about that. thanks for the reminder scarlet.

Try Cornhuskers, it is really good or Neutrogena has a great one that Paul Harvey recommends.. According to Paul Harvey, "The Nordic fishermen use it to keep their skin soft.. Gotta believe old Paul, never known him to lie..

myLot reputation of 96/100. webeishere (12986)   ranked 1 out of 35 in dry skin  4 years ago

Never heard of Cornhuskers till 2 of yopu mentioned it. I wonder if it's available in Minnesota. I'll have to check this out next time I'm out shopping etc. I love listening to Paul Harvey myself.

These a brand that I think is Dove that has like Silk in the name, has a lavender container, it seems to work pretty well.

I tried one of the water proof ones, hated the smell and the feeling.

I find I hate the smells more than the way they feel so that was different.

But this one is not a bad scent or feeling.

what about petroleum jelly?? apply it after working your garden and of course you must wear gloves all the time...and also before retiring to bed apply it in your hands and wrapped it overnight..and if not working try using nivea cream/lotion maybe it helps its what we are using..

myLot reputation of 96/100. webeishere (12986)   ranked 1 out of 35 in dry skin  4 years ago

That has helped before but they way I do things around here on and off the puter using that is a no go. Nivea I have heard of but never used their lotions. I've used their shavingf creme for men.

The only tip I can come up with is use vasoline at night and put those stretch gloves on and you will wake up with baby soft hands. I'm sure you won't go for this tip though, many don't like this suggestion, but it does work very well.

For those hands or to that matter any other part of your baby,

PLAIN SOAP wash and rinse off, Then apply BABY OIL, rub it in, THATS IT,

WORKS on babies, for hundreds of years, then stupid us want to us all these fancy soaps with ACIDS in them,(and we all know acid burns, thats the idea you see burn the dirt away)

PLAIN SOAP and BABY OIL, is the best for you.

$$$$ won't get you a better product.

Good idea but, I use the computer right after washing from
gardening so oily hands are a no no. That's why I need a
decent almost oil free lotion. Thanks.

Hi GRANDPA BOB! I am using Eucerin, Dry Skin Therapy. I used it after I have used harsh detergents which leaves my skin super dry. Maybe it will work for you . It is good for sensitive skin.

I really have to suggest that you do get some gloves that will help the dryness some. For moisterizer Palmer Coco Butter lotion or some type of product that has Shea Butter in it. Depending on where you live if you Can Find Shea Butter in it's natural form then that would really be good. It's better that Coco Butter. It's really thick and you only have to use a little bit at a time. Try it and see.

myLot reputation of 96/100. webeishere (12986)   ranked 1 out of 35 in dry skin  4 years ago

I actually bopught 6 pair of worker gloves. But the thing is I
never think about using them. I just dig right in. Pun intended.
I have heard of Shea Butter. Thanks.

Yes, I have a few products that I absolutely LOVE Grandpa Bob (I use them for my feet because for some reason unknown to me they are so dry). Here are a few products that I use that actually work:

A) Gardener's Hand Healer (1862 Baume Du Jardiner Pour Les Mains: Gardner's Hand Healer made in France sold at local Bath&Body Works). I'm not sure if they still sell it (I'm sure they do), but it's very good on your feet and I'm sure it would be good anywhere on the body.

B) Gold Bond Body Lotion Triple Action Relief (It's in a Green bottle)

C) JR Watkins Lemon Cream Shea Butter, you can purchase from jrwatkins.com

I have also tried Vaseline Intensive Care & it's very good, too.
